Chelle Praises Eagles’ Intensity After Tunisia Thriller

Nigeria’s Triumph in Fez: A Thrilling Victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations

Nigeria’s Super Eagles showcased a remarkable display of resilience and skill as they narrowly escaped a late Tunisian comeback to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory in Fez on Saturday night. This hard-fought win not only secured their place in the round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations but also solidified their position as group leaders in Group C with six points.

The match was a rollercoaster ride, with Nigeria taking control early on and maintaining a commanding lead for most of the game. However, Tunisia’s determination and tactical adjustments in the final stages made it a nail-biting finish that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Key Performances and Tactical Mastery

Nigeria’s coach, Eric Chelle, praised his team’s performance after the match, highlighting the intensity and discipline displayed by the players. He particularly commended Ademola Lookman, whose contributions were instrumental in securing the win. Lookman provided two assists and scored a stunning left-footed goal in the 66th minute, showcasing his ability to influence the game at crucial moments.

Chelle emphasized the team’s ability to maintain possession and transition quickly from defense to attack. “I’m happy, once again, with the intensity we showed for 75 minutes. I’m pleased with how we recovered the ball both very high up the pitch and very deep. We were able to move forward quickly, but also to keep possession for long periods of the game,” he stated.

He also acknowledged the team’s dominance in creating scoring opportunities. “We created a lot of chances and opportunities to score. In the second half, up until the 75th minute, we deserved this victory.”

Tunisia’s Late Surge

Despite Nigeria’s strong performance, Tunisia mounted a spirited comeback in the latter stages of the game. Chelle recognized the energy and fighting spirit of the North African side. “Tunisia played with the energy that characterises them. Their first goal came from a set piece, and the second from a moment of play.”

However, Chelle remained confident in his team’s superiority. “But once again, we deserved this win, and I think we were the better team in every area of the game. Of course, it would be nice to finish a match without having to suffer so much,” he added.

Goals That Defined the Match

The opening goal came just before halftime when Victor Osimhen headed in a precise delivery from Ademola Lookman. The striker’s powerful strike gave Nigeria a 1-0 lead. Early in the second half, captain Wilfred Ndidi doubled the advantage with another header from a Lookman corner, extending Nigeria’s lead to 2-0.

Tunisia refused to go down without a fight. Montassar Talbi’s 75th-minute header from a Hannibal Mejbri free-kick brought the visitors back into the game, making it 2-1. Then, a VAR-awarded penalty ten minutes later saw Ali Abdi convert confidently, leveling the score at 2-2.

The tension reached its peak in stoppage time when Ferjani Sassi’s header narrowly missed the target, ensuring Nigeria’s narrow victory.

Looking Ahead

With this win, Nigeria has now qualified for the knockout stage of the tournament. They will face Uganda in their final group match in Fez next Tuesday, where they will aim to maintain their momentum and continue their journey in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
