Could the Oodie Weighted Blanket Improve Your Sleep? We Tested It

A Review of the Oodie Weighted Blanket: Does It Really Help You Sleep Better?

For many people, getting a good night’s sleep can be a challenge. Even the slightest noise or a tiny blinking light can disrupt your rest. When I had the opportunity to try out a weighted blanket from Oodie, I was excited to see if it could make a difference in my sleep routine.

Weighted blankets have gained popularity for their potential to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality. While I wasn’t sure I’d become this invested in a homewares product, the Oodie weighted blanket quickly became a favorite. Its soft and luxurious feel, along with its beautiful jewel tones (I received a deep burgundy one!), made it more than just a functional item. But it’s the functionality that truly keeps me coming back to my bed.

With 4.5kg of eco-friendly glass beads inside, the blanket provides a comforting weight without feeling smothering. The seven-layer design ensures the weight is evenly distributed, making it feel heavy but not uncomfortable. I’ve never felt more at ease when going to sleep.

My Verdict on the Oodie Weighted Blanket

Rating: 8.5/10

Pros:

  • The minky, soft material is perfect to lay over a bed sheet or use on its own for napping.
  • The eco-friendly glass beads make for the perfect heaviness, without feeling smothering.
  • The seven-layer design makes the blanket feel heavy without feeling the beads inside the fabric.

Cons:

  • After unboxing the blanket, you may have to shake it out so the glass beads are distributed more evenly.
  • The lush outer fabric could be too hot to use during summer weather conditions.
  • The outer material of the blanket is polyester, which isn’t very breathable or eco-friendly.
  • It’s making me not want to get out of bed!

What Makes the Oodie Weighted Blanket Special?

The heaviness of this blanket is palpable, with eco-friendly glass beads running through the entire blanket. I opted for the lowest level of weight – 4.5kg – just in case I felt overcome or smothered while I slept. Honestly, I could definitely go up in weight! The Oodie website recommends selecting a weight that falls approximately 1kg for every 10kg of body weight.

The plush exterior material is perfect for colder weather, especially when it comes to lounging around on the couch or taking a well-deserved weekend nap.

Using a Weighted Blanket for Sleeping

Using a weighted blanket is quite simple. When purchasing, make sure to follow the weight guidelines as recommended by Oodie. This is so the blanket isn’t too heavy to lift up and can be easily maneuvered while you sleep.

Once you’ve got your Oodie weighted blanket, make sure to shake out the beads so they’re evenly distributed. It may require a little elbow grease, but it makes for a much more even spread of weight across your body.

We recommend placing it on top of your usual set-up (top sheet, other blankets, etc.) so the polyester isn’t against your skin while sleeping. This is because the polyester isn’t as breathable as top sheet materials.

If you’re having a nap or just need a cosy snuggle, it’s fine to use it on its own.

When it comes time to wash your weighted blanket, it is recommended to hand-wash or put it on a gentle, cold cycle. Make sure to check your washing machine’s weight (and account for water weight) before putting it in for a spin.

Overall, Is a Weighted Blanket Worth It?

If sleep doesn’t come easily, or you just love the feeling of being hugged, then an Oodie weighted blanket is definitely worth it. There’s no question that it will keep you warm and snuggly and is perfect for winter weather.

I will personally be putting mine away for the hotter months of the year because of the slinky polyester fabric. However, there are heaps of other options from Oodie, including their cooling blanket, that I may give a go!
