Hilary Duff bares her soul on upcoming album, touching on family complexities
Hilary Duff, the beloved former teen idol, has revealed that her highly anticipated upcoming album, tentatively titled Luck… or Something, will delve into the intricate and often challenging landscape of her family life. At 38, Duff shared with Glamour that she finally feels ready to articulate these personal experiences through her music, a significant step for an artist who has largely kept these aspects of her life private.
The album’s themes are rumoured to touch upon a reported estrangement from her sister, Haylie Duff, 40, with whom she previously shared the screen in various film projects, as well as their father, Robert (Bob) Duff.
“That’s my family,” Duff explained to the publication. “Those are the people that affect you the most, take up the most space naturally as a human who’s born into something. Just because you’re born into a family doesn’t mean that it always stays together. You can only control your side and your street. I’ve had a very complicated life, and my parents had a very complicated thing.”
Duff acknowledged that while family dynamics can be complex, her decision to explore these themes now stems from a personal readiness. “I know it’s not rare, and I think it goes back to the theme of, Why share now? I guess I just felt ready.”
Unpacking “We Don’t Talk” and the weight of unspoken words
One track that appears to directly address the rumoured rift with her sister is titled “We Don’t Talk.” The lyrics paint a poignant picture of fractured communication and lingering questions. Duff sings, “People ask me how you’re doing, I wanna say amazing but the truth is I don’t know, what I always end up saying is how we don’t talk.”
The song continues to explore the pain of this disconnect, with Duff questioning the origins of the estrangement: “‘Cause we come from the same home, from the same love, a different combination but the same love.” She expresses a deep yearning for understanding and reconciliation, singing, “Not even sure what it was about. If I did something different would you feel something different? Would you at least let me hear you out?”
A father’s love and a sister’s subtle gestures
Beyond the sisterly bond, another track reportedly delves into Duff’s relationship with her father. According to Glamour, she sings on this song, “I wish I could sleep on planes, and that my father would really love me.” This lyric hints at a deep-seated desire for paternal validation.
In a subtle nod to the ongoing family dynamics, Haylie Duff recently “liked” an essay published by Ashley Tisdale on The Cut, discussing the concept of a “toxic mum group.” This action has fuelled speculation, as Hilary Duff was rumoured to have been part of a similar friendship circle.
Global tour to accompany new musical chapter
As Duff embarks on this new musical chapter, she has also confirmed an international tour to support Luck… or Something. Fans in the US and the UK can anticipate her arrival later this year, with a highly anticipated stop in Australia also planned. This tour signifies not only a return to live performance but also a platform to connect with her audience through her most personal work to date.
