Brisbane Lions Secure Back-to-Back AFL Wins
The Brisbane Lions have made a strong statement in the AFL, securing back-to-back wins after a dominant performance against Collingwood. The match, played on Easter Thursday at the Gabba, saw the Lions come out on top with a 54-point victory, marking a significant turnaround from their previous encounter.
The game began with a major blow for Collingwood as star midfielder Nick Daicos was forced to withdraw late, an event that disrupted their usual rhythm. This setback proved pivotal, as the Magpies struggled to recover throughout the match.
The Lions showcased their strength and resilience, starting the game with five consecutive goals. Despite some missed opportunities, they maintained control of the game, eventually winning 17.17 (119) to 10.5 (65). Key players like Sam Draper and Oscar Allen impressed, with Draper contributing five clearances and Allen scoring three goals. Logan Morris led the charge with three goals and nine marks, highlighting the team’s dominance in the forward-50 area.

Collingwood faced additional challenges as other key players were sidelined. Captain Darcy Moore and veteran Scott Pendlebury were already on the injury list, adding to the difficulties they faced. Meanwhile, the Lions also dealt with their own set of absences, including Hugh McCluggage, Harris Andrews, Darcy Gardiner, Dan Annable, and Noah Answerth, who were either injured or suspended.
Despite these challenges, the Lions managed to collect 131 contested possessions compared to the Magpies’ 93, and had 20 marks inside 50, far exceeding the visitors’ five. This statistical advantage translated into a commanding performance on the field.
The Lions’ victory improved their record to 2-2, matching Collingwood’s standing after their previous defeat of St Kilda at Marvel Stadium. The win came after a tough game where the Lions initially surged ahead with a 5.0 score in the second quarter, only to face a series of missed opportunities that allowed Collingwood to stay in the contest.
Roan Steele and Lachlan Sullivan scored scrappy goals, compounding the missed chances before Will Ashcroft delivered a standout performance with 36 disposals. His left-footed wonder goal helped steady the Lions going into halftime.
Kai Lohmann was instrumental for the Lions, scoring four goals, including two in the first three minutes. Logan Morris added to the lead with a goal from 50m out, while Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey and Tim Membrey tried to keep the game competitive. Morris eventually found his rhythm, kicking his third goal to create a 37-point lead.
Zac Bailey followed suit, extending the lead to 39 points and effectively sealing the victory. The Lions continued to pile on goals in the final quarter, showcasing their depth and determination.
West Coast pick-up Oscar Allen played a crucial role, demonstrating excellent movement and several high pack marks. Former Essendon ruckman Sam Draper had his best performance since returning from injuries, contributing significantly to the team’s efforts.
On the Collingwood side, Dan McStay scored four goals against his former club, while Dan Houston recorded 32 touches. Josh Daicos was another standout performer, gaining 722 metres with 25 possessions.
This victory not only highlights the Lions’ ability to overcome adversity but also sets the stage for an exciting season ahead. With key players stepping up and a strong team dynamic, the Brisbane Lions are proving to be a formidable force in the AFL.
