A Triumph at the Edinburgh Regional Final
Pianist Joshua Gibson has made history by securing the top award at the recent Edinburgh regional final, captivating both judges and the audience with a remarkable performance of Liszt’s Liebestraume No. 3. His talent and dedication shone through during the event, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.
Joshua will now compete for the national title at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on May 24. This is a significant milestone in his musical journey, as it offers him the opportunity to showcase his skills on a larger stage.
The competition, held at Portobello High School on March 30, was open to all schools in the Capital. The adjudicators faced a challenging task, as they had to select winners from a pool of exceptionally talented musicians. The event provided a platform for young artists to demonstrate their abilities and gain valuable experience.
Recognizing Excellence in Music
The runner-up in the competition was singer Liza Aquado, an S6 pupil from St Augustine’s RC High School. She delivered a powerful performance of Times Are Hard for Dreamers from the musical Amelie, showcasing her vocal prowess and emotional depth.
Another standout performer was guitarist Ivar Mackie, an S6 pupil at Portobello High School. He won the title of Most Promising Young Musician for his rendition of Unholy Confessions by Avenged Sevenfold. His performance highlighted not only his technical skill but also his ability to connect with the audience.
Scottish Young Musicians (SYM) is an inclusive competition that welcomes all pupils attending school in Scotland, regardless of age or standard. It offers young people the chance to compete for prestigious titles such as Solo Performer of the Year, Ensemble of the Year, and Brass Ensemble of the Year. Each local authority hosts local and regional heats to select their representatives for the national final.
Over the past four years, SYM has grown into the largest and most important national music competition in schools. It provides participants with a life-changing and unforgettable experience, helping them build confidence and continue competing at the highest level.
A Celebration of Talent and Dedication
Douglas Anderson, curriculum leader of expressive arts at Queensferry High, shared his pride in Joshua’s achievement. “We are thrilled for Joshua winning the regional round of the SYM competition,” he said. “Joshua is an incredible performer, and we are so glad that his talents are being recognised through this competition.”
He praised Joshua for his dedication, noting that he consistently gives 100% to every performance. “From the dedicated practice sessions to the handling of nerves when on stage, Joshua always puts in the effort to create a stand-out performance while remaining extremely humble about his abilities.”
Joshua has been involved in the music department for several years, completing his National Qualifications (NQs) and participating in various concerts and shows. His journey reflects a deep commitment to his craft and a passion for music.
As he prepares for the national final, the support from his school community is unwavering. “We wish him all the luck for the national final and we will be in the crowd cheering him on,” added Douglas.
