SRH Coach Vettori Says Cummins’ Absence Doesn’t Hurt Team

Leadership and Performance in the Absence of Pat Cummins

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) team has been navigating a challenging phase without their captain, Pat Cummins. Despite his absence, the head coach, Brendon Vettori, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform well under the leadership of stand-in skipper Ishan Kishan.

Vettori praised Kishan for his leadership qualities, highlighting that the wicket-keeper batter has shown promise in guiding the team. This comes as Cummins continues to recover from a back injury, which has kept him out of action for the past six months. He missed the opening game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and also did not participate in the recent ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Cummins has been training in the nets, but he is not yet fully fit. The team is hopeful that he will return to the playing XI midway through the season. Vettori emphasized the importance of Cummins’ presence, noting that he has been in constant communication with Kishan regarding the responsibilities of captaincy.

“Ishan has been highly successful as captain so far. It is a bit different in IPL, but we can’t take it negatively from the point of leading the side,” Vettori said.

Kishan made an impressive start in the first match of the season, scoring 80 runs off 38 balls. His performance was highlighted by a sensational catch from Phil Salt, which eventually led to his dismissal. Vettori noted that Kishan leads from the front, which can have a positive impact on the morale of the players.

“Ishan loves leadership and being out there in the middle. He was phenomenal with the bat in the first game. He is still understanding the group and the dynamics of the team. I am confident that he will be effective as a leader for us,” he concluded.

Addressing Team Weaknesses

Despite Kishan’s efforts, SRH faces several challenges, particularly in their bowling department. In the first game, they conceded 203 runs in less than 16 overs, resulting in a Net Run Rate of -4.171. This indicates a need for improvement in their bowling strategy and execution.

For SRH to have a chance of winning the upcoming match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, the batters will need to score over 230 runs. This target highlights the importance of strong performances from the batting lineup, especially given the team’s current form.

Key Points to Consider

  • Leadership Transition: Ishan Kishan has taken on the role of captain with confidence and has shown potential in leading the team.
  • Injury Update: Pat Cummins is still recovering from a back injury and is expected to return later in the season.
  • Bowling Challenges: The team needs to address weaknesses in their bowling department to improve their overall performance.
  • Batting Targets: To secure a win, the batters must consistently score high runs, especially against strong opposition.

As the team moves forward, the focus will be on adapting to the new leadership structure while working on improving key areas such as bowling and batting. With the right strategies and support, SRH can overcome these challenges and aim for success in the remaining matches.
