Starc fires back at misguided injury comments

Mitchell Starc Addresses Fitness Claims Amid IPL Absence

Mitchell Starc, the fast bowler for Delhi Capitals, has responded to claims that he is “absolutely fit” despite being set to miss the opening matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Australian cricketer is currently dealing with a shoulder and elbow injury that developed during the Australian summer. His absence from the early stages of the tournament has sparked discussions about his fitness and the management of his injury.

Criticism from Indian Commentators

Former Indian batter and commentator Aakash Chopra had previously made headlines by suggesting that Starc was “absolutely fit” and questioning how Cricket Australia handled his injury. This statement led to further scrutiny of the situation, especially as Starc’s availability for the IPL remains uncertain.

Harsha Bhogle, a respected Indian commentator, also voiced concerns about the process behind Delhi Capitals waiting for updates on Starc’s condition. On X, Bhogle expressed disappointment, stating that it is a high-profile league with significant budgets, and teams should have the right to plan accordingly.

“I see the coach of Delhi Capitals saying they are waiting to hear about Starc’s availability,” he wrote. “That is disappointing because this is a very high profile league with huge budgets and teams have a right to plan, to know what they are buying.”

Bhogle emphasized that the international calendar is known in advance, and players and boards should be able to provide guarantees unless there are unforeseen injuries or political developments. He also predicted that contract deductions might exceed the per-match value assigned.

Starc Clarifies His Situation

In response to the ongoing debate, Starc took to Instagram to address the situation directly. He clarified that he is currently rehabbing and managing an injury in his shoulder and elbow, which he was unaware of the full extent of during the Australian summer.

“These individuals have made some strong statements around involvement in the IPL and provided heavily misinformed opinions of players, preached them as facts, and claim to know my body better than me,” he wrote. “With that said, I do acknowledge this injury setback and timing is disruptive to the Delhi team and I apologise for that and to the fans for not being available for the early part of this season.”

Starc emphasized his commitment to joining Delhi Capitals (DC) and maintaining communication with the team. He stated that he will continue to do everything possible to be available for DC as soon as possible.

Starc’s Role in the IPL

Starc was retained by Delhi Capitals in the 2026 IPL auction for a $1.6 million (117.5 crore) deal after the club finished fifth in the previous season. The left-hander took 14 wickets in 11 matches last season, making him a valuable asset for the team.

However, Starc’s injury has raised questions about his availability for the upcoming season. His absence, along with other Australian fast bowlers, has added to the challenges faced by the team.

Other Australian Fast Bowlers Also Injured

Australia’s fast bowlers have all experienced injuries over the summer. Josh Hazlewood missed the entire Ashes series, while Pat Cummins only played one match. Both Hazlewood and Cummins will also miss the start of the IPL, adding to the challenges for the Australian cricket team and their respective franchises.

This situation highlights the importance of proper injury management and communication between players, teams, and governing bodies. As the IPL approaches, the focus will remain on ensuring that players are in the best possible condition to perform at their peak.
