Ciraldo stands by Bulldogs’ strong response to vile remarks

Bulldogs Coach Supports Decision to Disable Social Media Comments

Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo has publicly supported the club’s decision to disable social media comments after a wave of threatening messages were directed at players. The situation escalated when the club’s Instagram page was flooded with offensive comments from angry fans, leading to the temporary removal of comments on a post announcing the round five team list.

Since then, Canterbury has reopened comments on their recent posts, but club boss Phil Gould was still questioned about the incident on social media. In response, Gould made a strong statement via X, saying, “They are not fans.” This sentiment was echoed by Ciraldo, who emphasized the need to protect the players from harmful online behavior.

“We love our fans and we love their passion, but if it crosses the line, we have a duty of care to protect our players,” Ciraldo said. “I’m really proud of our club that we decided to do something about that and just shut it down. Everyone’s got their right to an opinion, but on our channels, you don’t step over the line … really proud of our club for making that move forward.”

Ciraldo also praised Gould’s comments, stating, “He couldn’t have summed it up any better, so I’ll leave that with him.” He added that the issue is not unique to the Bulldogs but reflects broader societal challenges within sports.

“At some stage, someone somewhere higher up needs to figure out what we want to stand for and I’m glad someone in our club has,” he said.

Ciraldo indicated that he would leave it up to individual players whether they want to block fans from sending direct messages on social media. This approach highlights the club’s commitment to balancing fan engagement with player well-being.

Looking Ahead: Bulldogs’ Next Match

Canterbury will now focus on bouncing back from a disappointing loss against the Knights last weekend. They are set to face South Sydney in a traditional Good Friday clash. However, the team will be without young forward Harry Hayes due to injury. His absence will see debutant Logan Spinks take his place on the Bulldogs’ six-man bench.

The upcoming match presents an opportunity for the Bulldogs to regroup and showcase their resilience. With a mix of experienced players and emerging talent, the team aims to deliver a strong performance and regain momentum in the season.

As the NRL season progresses, the focus remains on maintaining a positive environment for players while addressing the challenges posed by online negativity. The Bulldogs’ decision to disable comments serves as a reminder of the importance of respect and responsibility in sports culture.
