Alpine Addresses Allegations of Sabotage Against Franco Colapinto
Formula One team Alpine have responded to allegations that they are sabotaging their own driver, Franco Colapinto, in favor of his teammate, Pierre Gasly. The claims have sparked significant debate, especially following the Chinese Grand Prix, where Colapinto finished 10th and Gasly came in seventh, 49 seconds ahead of his teammate.
Colapinto, a 24-year-old Argentine driver, is in his first full season with Alpine, while Gasly has been competing in Formula One since 2017. The disparity in their performances has led to speculation about the team’s support for Colapinto, particularly after he was involved in a high-speed crash with British driver Oliver Bearman during the Japanese Grand Prix. This incident resulted in online abuse directed at Colapinto, prompting Alpine to issue a detailed statement defending their driver and denying any wrongdoing.

In their 1,200-word statement, Alpine emphasized their commitment to Colapinto, stating:
“Franco is our driver and the team has placed its trust in him, just as he has with the team. That is an indication of the commitment we have to Franco and his place in the team with equal footing alongside Pierre.”
The statement also addressed concerns about whether Colapinto was receiving the same level of technical support as Gasly. Alpine clarified that both drivers have been running with the same equipment, except for some minor parts in China due to a gearbox change.
Transparency and Team Unity
Alpine acknowledged that there may be instances where upgrades are introduced to one car before the other due to the fast-paced nature of development. However, they assured fans that such decisions would be communicated transparently.
“Any questions about sabotage or not giving Franco the same car are completely unfounded,” the statement read. “There might be times this year when pushing in the development race that upgrades come to one car first, which the team will communicate and be completely transparent about.”
The team also highlighted the collaborative environment between Colapinto and Gasly, emphasizing that both drivers regularly share data and feedback. This teamwork is seen as crucial in modern Formula One, where every piece of information can make a difference.
Condemning Online Abuse
Alpine expressed strong disapproval of the online abuse faced by Colapinto, particularly following the incident with Bearman. They reiterated their stance against hate speech and bullying on social media, urging fans to engage respectfully.
“We condemn the hateful messages aimed towards Franco after last weekend’s race in Japan, the same way it condemns the abuse and threats that were aimed towards Esteban Ocon following a collision between the two cars at the Chinese Grand Prix,” the statement said.
Ocon took full responsibility for the collision with Colapinto and publicly apologized, but the backlash from fans was deemed unacceptable. Alpine also condemned the abuse directed at Colapinto after the Suzuka incident, stressing the importance of safety and the need for responsible behavior from fans.
Looking Ahead
With the upcoming Miami Grand Prix, Alpine aims to build on their recent performance, having been the fourth-fastest car in the last two races. The team is focused on continuous improvement and ensuring both drivers have equal opportunities to score points for the championship.
During the break, Colapinto and Gasly will return to the team’s base in Enstone, working closely with engineers and using simulators to maximize performance. The team also thanked their fans for their continued support, expressing eagerness to return to racing and deliver more exciting results.
As the season progresses, Alpine remains committed to transparency, teamwork, and the principles of fair competition. Their response underscores their dedication to both drivers and the broader Formula One community.
