Levy’s Legacy: Spurs’ Struggles Blamed on Former Chairman

Tottenham Under New Scrutiny: Club Chief Details Inherited Woes

Tottenham Hotspur’s new chief executive, Vinai Venkatesham, has delivered a stark assessment of the club’s operational health, detailing a series of significant challenges he believes he inherited. His frank evaluation comes after the departure of former chairman Daniel Levy, who had helmed the North London club for nearly 25 years before stepping down in September. Levy’s exit followed Venkatesham’s own arrival at the club in April, and the timing has led to a deeper examination of the club’s internal workings.

Concerns about Tottenham’s league standing, which had dipped precariously close to the relegation zone, were formally raised by the club’s Fan Advisory Board. In a meeting held on March 3rd, just two days before a crucial 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace that left Spurs hovering just a single point above the drop, the board expressed serious reservations. Published minutes from this meeting have since revealed a comprehensive critique of the club’s condition.

Venkatesham, in his discussions, explained that since taking up his post in June 2025, a thorough organisational review had been conducted to pinpoint issues and identify necessary corrective actions. While acknowledging the club’s achievements in areas such as its state-of-the-art stadium, training facilities, commercial expansion, and stadium operations, he stressed that several key aspects were falling short of the standards required for elite competition.

Key Areas Identified for Improvement

The review pinpointed several critical shortcomings that require immediate attention:

  • On-Pitch Performance: An apparent lack of consistent focus across the organisation on achieving on-pitch success was identified as a major concern. This suggests a disconnect between the club’s operational structure and its primary sporting objective.
  • Expertise and Empowerment: The club was found to be lacking specialist expertise in certain crucial areas. Conversely, in other departments, existing experts were not sufficiently empowered to make decisions, potentially hindering progress and innovation.
  • Transfer Market Competitiveness: The existing wage structure and the club’s approach to player transactions were found to have negatively impacted their ability to compete effectively in the transfer market. This has likely limited their capacity to attract and retain top talent.
  • Financial Pressures: Significant financial pressures have arisen from heavy investment in player transfers coupled with limited player sales. This situation amplifies the importance of Financial Fair Play constraints in future strategic planning.
  • Squad Strengthening: The men’s first-team squad was identified as requiring enhancement in terms of both quality and experience, with a particular need for stronger leadership on the pitch.
  • Women’s Team Prioritisation: The review also highlighted an insufficient prioritisation of the women’s team, suggesting that resources and attention have not been adequately allocated to this vital section of the club.
  • Internal Culture: The internal culture within the organisation was identified as needing improvement in a number of areas, indicating potential issues with morale, communication, or working practices.
  • Supporter Disconnect: A growing disconnect between the club and its loyal supporter base was also noted, suggesting a need for improved communication and engagement strategies.

Implementing Change and Modernising Governance

In response to these findings, Venkatesham has initiated a series of strategic appointments aimed at bolstering expertise within the club. Furthermore, a “modernised governance structure” is being implemented. This new framework is intended to foster:

  • Increased Resilience: Building a more robust organisational structure capable of withstanding challenges.
  • Checks and Balances: Establishing clearer lines of accountability and decision-making processes.
  • Greater Expertise: Ensuring that decisions are informed by specialist knowledge.
  • Delegation and Agility: Moving away from a centralised model towards greater delegation, enabling experts to make quicker, more informed decisions and allowing the club to operate with greater speed and efficiency.

Regarding player recruitment, the club has announced significant changes to its approach. These include the removal of previous wage structure constraints and a revised transaction strategy designed to strike a better balance between the speed of execution and securing optimal deals.

The club has also indicated an increased emphasis on player sales, alongside continued revenue growth, as a means to fund investment in the playing squad and ensure compliance with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Season Ticket Renewals Delayed Amidst Uncertainty

Recognising the urgency and priority of the current situation, with Tottenham fighting to secure their Premier League status, the club has taken steps to address supporter concerns. Notably, the season-ticket renewal process for the 2026/27 season has been delayed.

In an email to season-ticket holders, the club stated: “As previously communicated, General Admission Season Ticket Renewals for 2026/27 open today (Thursday 12 March). In line with our Ticketing Charter published in March 2024, we are committed to opening renewals by no later than 15 March each year. We recognise the seriousness of the current league position of our men’s team and, following discussions with our Fan Advisory Board and the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust, can confirm the renewal window for 2026/27 will now remain open for an extended period until Sunday 7 June to ensure fans have full clarity on next season before renewing.”

This decision contrasts with previous seasons, where fans typically had only a few days after the final league game to renew. While season-ticket prices were frozen for the current season following consultation with supporter groups, the extended renewal window this year provides fans with more time to make informed decisions.

Despite claims of improved agility through the new governance structure, Tottenham has faced criticism from fans regarding the delay in parting ways with their former head coach. The pressure is now mounting on interim boss Igor Tudor, who has overseen four successive defeats.

Tottenham faces a challenging run of fixtures, including a daunting clash with Liverpool this Sunday, and a potentially season-defining match against fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest on March 22nd. The club’s immediate future, both on and off the pitch, remains a significant talking point.
