Queensland Star Patrick Crotty Joins MLB for 2026 Season

A Dream Come True

Redcliffe teenager Patrick Crotty was just five years old when he first pitched a baseball in the backyard with his three older brothers. Now, at 17, he has made history as the first Australian to secure a professional baseball contract for the 2026 season after signing with the Philadelphia Phillies last week. For Crotty, this moment is a “dream come true.”

“It was awesome. Me and Mum were sitting down and they gave us a call and it was just a moment we got to experience together,” he said.

The Role of Family Support

Crotty credits his mother for being instrumental in his success. She has supported not only financially but also emotionally throughout his journey.

“She’s had to pay for a lot of things, especially with all four boys playing competitive baseball,” he said. “A lot of money has gone to the game, so hopefully it’s worth it for her.”

Beyond financial support, his mother has been a constant presence through every challenge.

“She’s been by my side through everything, through the ups and downs she’s just been able to provide and she’s really special to me,” he said.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite the support, there have been tough moments. In 2024, Crotty suffered a shoulder injury that kept him off the pitching mound for six months. However, he remained determined to return stronger.

A Family Legacy

Baseball runs in the family. It was a passion shared by Crotty’s late father and mother. To honor his father, who passed away when he was just a year old, Crotty wears the number 43 on his jersey.

“It’s to remember my dad’s age, when he died. It’s something I take with me to every game and it’s something I can wear with pride,” he said.

Crotty has inherited his father’s talent on the mound, having clocked nearly 150 kilometers per hour on the field. While he acknowledges the speed is impressive, he knows there’s more work to be done to break into the top leagues in the US.

Family Pride and Future Goals

His older brother Eddie expressed the family’s pride in Patrick’s achievement.

“We all love the game. The whole family has had heaps of people reaching out congratulating him because it’s a big achievement for himself,” Eddie said.

One of Patrick’s favorite memories is going undefeated for an entire season in Little League. He also represented Australia for the first time in 2024, showcasing his talent on the international stage.

International Experience and Next Steps

Crotty has already played for both Queensland and Australia, and now he is one of just 43 Australians playing baseball professionally overseas. His next step involves traveling to the Dominican Republic, where he will continue training while his US work visa is processed.

From there, he will move to Florida to begin his six-year contract with the Phillies at the rookie league level.

Encouragement to Aspiring Players

Crotty encourages other young athletes to chase their dreams.

“It’s always possible, just keep chasing the dream,” he said.

He and his family are looking forward to traveling to the US to watch him play.

“It’d be good to be on the sidelines and watch your brother perform on the world stage. It’d be unreal.”

A Journey Fueled by Passion

Crotty’s journey from backyard pitches to professional contracts is a testament to hard work, family support, and unwavering determination. As he prepares for the next chapter in his career, he remains focused on what lies ahead.

For now, he continues to train and prepare for the challenges that come with playing at the highest level. His story serves as an inspiration to young athletes everywhere, proving that with dedication and belief, dreams can become reality.
