A Journey of Unity, Sustainability, and Cultural Exchange
Team Europe, Gladiators Cycling Group, and a group of passionate cyclists recently completed an 800-kilometre relay across Ghana, marking the end of a week-long journey that combined elements of diplomacy, cultural exchange, and sustainability advocacy. The “Ride With Team Europe” event started in Tamale, located in Northern Ghana, and concluded at the Netherlands Embassy in Accra after seven days of challenging cycling conditions.
The relay was not just a test of endurance but also a symbolic representation of collaboration between various stakeholders. It involved ambassadors and diplomats from six EU member states — Germany, Denmark, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Austria, and France — who passed the baton along the route while cycling through multiple regions of the country. This initiative was part of the celebrations marking the European Union’s 50-year physical presence in Ghana, with a strong emphasis on promoting sustainable practices.
Mr Rune Skinnebach, the EU Ambassador to Ghana, praised the Gladiators Cycle Group for their role in making the relay a success. He described them as “the real heroes of this journey.” According to him, the event incorporated a strong sustainability element, with participants planting 1,000 trees in collaboration with Ghana’s Forestry Commission under the Tree for Life initiative. This effort aimed to highlight the importance of environmental conservation and community engagement.
The warmth of the Ghanaian people was evident throughout the journey. Mr Skinnebach noted that people joined the cyclists along the way, either on their bicycles or by cheering them on, even in the most remote parts of the country. Along the route, the team visited local chiefs, regional ministers, and community representatives, reinforcing the spirit of unity and cooperation.
Madam Wendy Van Meel, Acting Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, shared her personal experience of the journey. She said it offered a fresh perspective on Ghana, allowing her to see the country not from the comfort of a car but from the seat of a bicycle. She praised the Gladiators Cycle Group for leading the expedition from north to south, emphasizing the unique view of the country that cycling provided.
Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority, who attended the program on behalf of Sports Minister Kofi Adams, congratulated the team for their efforts. He highlighted the need for more rider-friendly roads, stating that the journey created a roadmap to reduce and eliminate road safety issues. He linked the initiative to President John Dramani Mahama’s “Big Push” agenda, which aims to expand infrastructure and improve safety for all road users.
The finale of the event featured a sustainable fashion show by the All-Foundation Group. The show showcased a collection titled “Up Cycling in Sports,” highlighting environmental responsibility through the use of recycled sportswear. This segment underscored the broader message of sustainability that permeated the entire event.
