Patrick Vieira Criticizes Mikel Arteta’s Decision to Substitue Eberechi Eze
Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira has expressed his disappointment with Mikel Arteta’s decision to substitute Eberechi Eze during the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. The match, which could have a significant impact on the Premier League title race, saw City secure a narrow victory thanks to goals from Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki.
Arsenal managed to score through Kai Havertz, who forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into an error that led to the Gunners’ goal. Havertz was positioned as a forward, ahead of Viktor Gyokeres, and was supported by Noni Madueke and Eze. This was a rare start for Eze on the left flank, as he was preferred over Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
Eze had moments of brilliance, drifting into wide areas and even hitting the post in the second half. However, he was substituted after 74 minutes, leaving Arsenal to play the remaining 24 minutes without him. Vieira believes this decision was a key mistake, as the former Arsenal captain felt Eze was beginning to influence the game.

“His movement on the left side created an overload, which was part of the tactical plan,” Vieira said on Sky Sports. “He touched the ball a lot, and it was really interesting to watch. I was a bit disappointed that he came off because he was getting into the game and could have created more chances for scoring goals.”
Vieira emphasized that Eze’s quality could have made a difference, and he feels the decision to replace him was not optimal. He added that the substitution might have cost Arsenal a chance to change the momentum of the game.
The Current Standings and Mental Game
Despite the loss, Arsenal remains three points ahead of City in the Premier League table. However, City has a game in hand, and if they win against Burnley on Wednesday, the gap could close significantly. The Gunners also have a slightly better goal difference (37 to 36), but this could shift depending on how City performs in their upcoming match.
Vieira believes the title race is now turning into a mental battle. He noted that while Arsenal put in a good performance, the difference between good and great teams lies in their ability to compete at the highest level consistently.

“I was confident that Arsenal would get a result, and by that I mean at least a draw because it is a difficult team to beat and score goals against,” Vieira said. “Today, they had a good performance, but the top players made a difference on the field.”
He pointed out that City’s momentum is currently in their favor, and he is curious to see how Arsenal will respond to the setback. “It’s a huge disappointment for them, and they will feel the pressure more now,” Vieira added. “I always question the mental strength of the team, and I will question it more now regarding the result today.”
Key Tactical Decisions
The match highlighted several key tactical decisions made by both managers. While Arteta opted to bring on Trossard for Eze, Vieira believes that the decision may have cost Arsenal a crucial opportunity to maintain their dominance in the game.
Eze’s performance demonstrated his potential to be a key player for Arsenal, especially in high-pressure matches. His ability to create space and link up play could have been vital in the final stages of the game.
As the Premier League title race intensifies, the Gunners will need to regroup and focus on their next fixtures. With City having the advantage in terms of momentum, Arsenal must find ways to regain control and prove their mental resilience.
