Harry Edwards’ Progress and West Coast’s Path Forward
West Coast coach Andrew McQualter has expressed confidence in the future role of key defender Harry Edwards as the team looks to strengthen its backline in the second half of the season. Edwards, who has been recovering from a recent concussion, has shown promising signs in his rehabilitation process.
Edwards hasn’t played since sustaining a concussion during the Eagles’ round two victory over North Melbourne, which marked his return from a pre-season head injury against Port Adelaide. While no specific timeline has been set for his return, the fact that he is gradually increasing his non-contact training loads is seen as a positive development.
The 25-year-old was recently spotted wearing a helmet during training, highlighting the cautious approach the club is taking given his history of concussions. Despite the team’s need for additional players, the Eagles are prioritizing Edwards’ full recovery, ensuring he gets the time required to make a complete return.
Struggles Exposed in Western Derby Loss
The Eagles’ challenges were evident in their 56-point loss to Fremantle in the recent western derby. Although they won the inside 50m count, they struggled to contain the Dockers’ tall forward line. Jye Amiss kicked five goals, while Pat Voss added three, showcasing the effectiveness of Fremantle’s attack.
Reuben Ginbey performed admirably by limiting Josh Treacy to just one goal, but the lack of consistent support from other defenders was clear. Former Tiger Tylar Young and Sandy Brock have found it difficult to secure key positions, leaving Ginbey often tasked with facing the opposition’s main attackers.
McQualter acknowledged the progress made by Edwards, stating:
“We’re pretty hopeful Harry will be able to clear all the protocols within the next little bit of time, and from there we’ll just have to build up his contest work again. He’s obviously been out of that for a little period now, so we’re hopeful in the not too distant future we’ll have Harry back playing footy, which is terrific for us.”

Potential Return and Team Strategy
With eight games remaining before their mid-season bye, the possibility of Edwards returning either just before or after this break is being considered if his recovery continues smoothly. McQualter praised Edwards’ past performance, noting that he was one of the premier key defenders in the competition during the middle part of last year.
“He’s got a lot of growth, but he’s going to take a little bit of time to build himself back up. He’s missed a lot of footy now, so I’m pretty sure he’ll have to come back through our WAFL program and hopefully we get a big, big chunk of him for the second half of the year,” McQualter said.
In the interim, McQualter may look to give forward Jobe Shanahan more opportunities in defense to help bridge the gap left by Edwards’ absence.
Upcoming Matchup
West Coast, currently sitting at 2-4 on the table, will face St Kilda (also 2-4) at Marvel Stadium on Sunday. The match presents an opportunity for the Eagles to regroup and focus on improving their defensive structure ahead of the critical second half of the season.
