A Centennial Celebration of Music and Unity
Music lovers in Stoughton and Cambridge are in for a special treat as the Brockton Symphony Orchestra marks its 100th anniversary with a series of concerts that promise to be both memorable and meaningful. The orchestra will perform Beethoven’s iconic “Symphony No. 9,” a piece that has become a symbol of unity, hope, and joy.
The first performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 16 at Stoughton High School, followed by another concert at 3 p.m. on May 17 at First Church in Cambridge. These events are part of a broader celebration that highlights the orchestra’s enduring legacy and its commitment to bringing high-quality music to the community.
A Special Program for a Special Occasion
The concert, titled “100 Years and 100 More,” will feature a collaboration with the Cantata Singers and a quartet of vocal soloists: Holly Cameron, Annie Rosen, Matthew Arnold, and Ron Williams. Together, they will bring Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” to life, a section of the symphony that has become one of the most recognizable and beloved pieces in classical music.
The program will open with Gardner Read’s “Vernal Equinox,” which sets a reflective tone, followed by Joel Thompson’s “A Prayer for Deliverance.” This selection is designed to guide the audience through a journey from contemplation to renewal, ultimately leading to the triumphant and uplifting conclusion of Beethoven’s vision of joy and brotherhood.
Part of a Larger Regional Celebration
These performances are also part of ArtWeek SouthCoast 2026, a 10-day regional event that celebrates creativity and community across Southeastern Massachusetts. Running from May 8 to May 17, the festival brings together artists, musicians, and cultural organizations to showcase the region’s vibrant artistic landscape.
For over a century, the Brockton Symphony Orchestra has been a vital cultural institution on the South Shore. It has provided live symphonic music to diverse audiences, supported the development of young musicians, and played a key role in fostering a sense of community through the arts.
