Ukrainian Flag Bearer’s Defiant Stand Against IOC

Ukrainian Skeleton Athlete Defies IOC Over Helmet Honouring Fallen Compatriots

Vladyslav Heraskevych, Ukraine’s flag bearer and a determined skeleton racer, has vowed to stand firm against the International Olympic Committee (IOC) if necessary, refusing to be silenced on his mission to honour fallen Ukrainian athletes. Heraskevych, currently competing with a helmet adorned with the faces of over 20 Ukrainian athletes lost in Russia’s ongoing invasion, has garnered significant public backing, including from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

However, the IOC has issued a directive, stating the personalised helmet is not permissible for competition. They have offered a compromise: the option to wear a black armband as a mark of remembrance.

“I truly believe they actually don’t have so many black bands to honour all the athletes that are fallen in this war,” Heraskevych stated during a press conference held on Tuesday afternoon (early Wednesday AEDT).

In a formal letter addressed to the Ukrainian Olympic Committee, the IOC articulated that Heraskevych would be prohibited from “competing” with the specially designed helmet, though it made no comment regarding its use during training sessions.

Mark Adams, an IOC spokesman, commented on the situation on Tuesday, saying, “I think what we’ve tried to do is to address his desires with compassion and understanding. He has expressed himself on social media and in the training and, as you know, we will not stop him expressing himself in press conferences, as he leaves competition in the mixed zone and elsewhere. We feel that this is a good compromise in the situation.”

Despite the IOC’s stance, Heraskevych remains resolute. He believes it is crucial to keep the world aware of the ongoing conflict and to pay tribute to those who have tragically lost their lives. He has declared his intention to continue wearing the helmet during all training sessions and throughout his competitions.

“If IOC betrays these athletes, I will not betray them,” he affirmed, reiterating his commitment even when questioned about the potential consequences of disqualification.

The striking helmet features poignant images of Ukrainian athletes who have perished, including Dmytro Sharpar, a competitor in the 2016 Youth Olympic Games, and Youth Olympic medallist boxer Maksym Halinichev.

This situation brings into focus Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter, which broadly stipulates that “no kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas.” The IOC has previously banned armbands, but indicated a willingness to consider exceptions in specific circumstances, such as Heraskevych’s case.

“We don’t want everyone wearing a black armband for every competition,” Adams elaborated. “But where there’s a good reasoning, it will be considered properly.”

Heraskevych, along with Ukraine’s chef de mission, has argued that the helmet does not contravene any IOC regulations. They have also raised concerns about the perceived leniency towards the display of banned Russian flags, which they claim have been seen without penalty.

“I also want to remind everyone that it’s like 20 people – 24 people here [on the helmet] but it’s in total more than 500 others who were killed,” the flag bearer emphasised. “Also because of their sacrifice, we are able to compete here as a team, not only me, but whole team also. I truly believe that, if not their sacrifice, then war could be also in Europe.”

On Tuesday, President Zelenskyy publicly commended Heraskevych for “reminding the world of the price of our struggle.”

“This truth cannot be inconvenient, inappropriate, or called a ‘political demonstration at a sporting event’,” Zelenskyy stated on social media, sharing a link to his message.

He continued, “It is a reminder to the entire world of what modern Russia is. And this is what reminds everyone of the global role of sport and the historic mission of the Olympic movement itself – it is all about peace and for the sake of life. Ukraine remains faithful to this. Russia proves the opposite.”

Adding to the chorus of support, the head coach of Latvia’s skeleton team stood alongside Heraskevych at the press conference, expressing his delegation’s solidarity with the Ukrainian athlete’s stance. This united front underscores the emotional weight and broader implications of Heraskevych’s decision to use his platform to advocate for remembrance and awareness. The debate highlights the complex intersection of sport, politics, and human rights on the global stage, with athletes often finding themselves at the forefront of sensitive international issues.
