Alisha Lehmann: Battling Misconceptions and Embracing Her Global Platform
Alisha Lehmann, the dynamic Swiss footballer, has candidly revealed the immense pressure and misconception that nearly drove her away from the sport she cherishes. Despite her significant global following, extending far beyond the football pitch, Lehmann has grappled with a persistent narrative that questions her commitment to the game. This damaging portrayal, she admits, once led her to the brink of quitting altogether.
With a colossal fan base exceeding 27 million across various social media platforms, Lehmann’s profile has skyrocketed in recent seasons. This surge in popularity has not only shone a brighter spotlight on women’s football but has also subjected her to intense scrutiny. It is this very scrutiny, she confessed, that at times became almost unbearable.
“When I was younger, it affected me more because I didn’t know how to handle the situation,” Lehmann explained. “There were moments where I was really sad and I used to ask my mum if I could not play football anymore.”

The 26-year-old forward detailed how the relentless criticism was rooted in a fundamentally false belief that her life was dominated by social media rather than her dedication to football. “People don’t know how much effort I actually put in when they say ‘Oh, she’s not a footballer’,” she stated. “They just think, oh she goes to training and then goes home and does TikToks or whatever. But that is really not true.”

Lehmann vehemently insists that her lifestyle is meticulously crafted around maximising her performance on the field. She adheres to strict routines designed to optimise her output, prioritising rest and recovery. “I rest so well, I sleep every afternoon and I would never do anything before training or a game that would affect how I play. I care so much about it.”

Now back in England, playing for Leicester City Women, Lehmann asserts that she has developed a resilience to the negativity. While the criticism may still surface, she has learned to effectively tune it out. “But now, I’m fine. I love my life and the people around me and I don’t get affected by it,” she said with conviction. “It’s just an opinion, as is everything in life, so I just focus on myself.”

Despite the considerable attention she garners off the field, those within the footballing fraternity have consistently lauded her professionalism. Coaches have frequently praised her unwavering work ethic and her influential presence within the squad, highlighting her leadership qualities.
Lehmann’s footballing journey has been a diverse one, traversing both the Women’s Super League in England and experiencing stints in Italy. Her career has seen her play for prominent clubs such as West Ham, Everton, and Aston Villa before heading to Italy to represent Juventus and Como. Her recent return to England earlier this year was viewed as a significant fresh start, but it also unfortunately reignited the ongoing debate surrounding her public image.
While a large segment of the footballing community celebrates her ability to attract new audiences to the women’s game, a smaller faction continues to question her dedication. This is a claim Lehmann firmly refutes. “If I’ve not done my best when I check my data after training, I will do extra rounds to try to improve,” she declared. “People can think what they want but everything I do is focused on being the best player I can be.”

Her commitment to self-improvement is evident in her approach to training and performance analysis. Lehmann understands that her actions on the pitch are the ultimate testament to her dedication. The misconception that her passion for football is overshadowed by her social media presence is a narrative she is determined to disprove through her consistent performances and relentless pursuit of excellence. Her global platform, while presenting unique challenges, also offers an unparalleled opportunity to champion women’s football and inspire the next generation of athletes, proving that glamour and grit can indeed coexist.
