Mabil’s Limbo: Brave Call Amidst Tough Times

Awer Mabil’s European Resolve Earns Socceroos Recall

After an extended hiatus from the national team setup, Socceroos winger Awer Mabil has explained the unwavering determination that kept him in Europe, a decision that has ultimately paved the way for his much-anticipated recall to the Australian squad. Mabil, who had been absent from the Socceroos for a significant 18 months, has been selected by coach Tony Popovic for upcoming friendlies against Cameroon and Curacao, signalling a potential resurgence in his international career.

The 26-year-old winger found himself in a period of uncertainty following a challenging stint with Swiss club Grasshoppers. Initially contracted until January 2025, Mabil departed the club, leaving him in limbo until the eleventh hour of the January-February transfer window. It was on the final day of that window that he secured a move to Spanish second division outfit CD Castellon.

Mabil elaborated on the motivations behind his decision to remain on the continent, despite the recent difficulties. “They presented to me what their goal is, and for me, I need a reason to get up every morning, and that was a great reason for me,” he told reporters. “The club wants to go to La Liga in a few years; if it happens this year, great. I’m sure it will happen; I don’t know if it will be this year or next year, but it will happen for sure. That’s what motivated me to go there.”

Crucially, even amidst the uncertainty of finding a new club, Mabil was resolute in his desire to continue his career in Europe. He expressed a deep-seated need for personal growth and challenge. “I think as a player, I’ve got a lot of things to prove to myself, most importantly,” he stated. “When I first went over there, my biggest goal was to stay there for 10 years and not just come back, no matter how hard things got. It got really hard and continued to be hard, but that’s how you learn.”

The winger reflected on how adversity has shaped his perspective. “I think as a person now, the older you get, the more you appreciate tough times in a sense,” Mabil explained. “I know it sounds weird, but that’s how you grow, and that’s how I find myself growing. I could be comfortable and come here and play every week in front of my family, but I still feel I need to be challenged.”

Overcoming Perceptions and Embracing the Challenge

Mabil also touched upon a perceived stigma surrounding Australian players in European football, suggesting a tendency for them not to endure lengthy stays abroad. “I’ve been in Europe for maybe 10 years, and there’s this thing about Australian players that they don’t stay overseas for long,” he observed. “There’s truth to that, but it all comes down to mentality. So, I think if they were to ask me about Europe and ask me a few questions, I’m there to help them.”

CD Castellon currently finds itself in a respectable seventh position on the league ladder, trailing league leaders Racing by 10 points with a game in hand. This solid footing provides a platform for Mabil to build upon as he looks to re-establish himself.

A Renewed Sense of Purpose with the Socceroos

However, Mabil’s immediate focus has shifted to his national team duties. Upon his arrival back in Australia, the winger shared a social media clip expressing a feeling akin to being a child again.

When questioned about the surprise element of his Socceroos call-up, Mabil responded with genuine gratitude. “You could say that,” he admitted. “I was just grateful, to be honest, to get called up again, to be among it again. I’ve missed it. It was nice to be considered again.” He emphasised the profound appreciation that comes with representing his country. “It’s something I have to enjoy, every moment of it, and it’s something that when you’re not here, you realise when you’re away from it how special it is to represent your country. So, it’s something that I’m grateful for, to be back.”

Despite the periods of professional uncertainty, Mabil’s confidence appears to have been significantly bolstered by his move to CD Castellon. He confidently stated, “I’m better now, 100 per cent,” and is eager to seize this opportunity, with an eye on a potential World Cup berth.

Mabil’s journey serves as a testament to the importance of perseverance and the pursuit of personal growth, even when faced with considerable challenges. His commitment to staying in Europe, rather than seeking the comfort of a guaranteed starting position back home, has ultimately led to this rewarding national team recall. He understands the fleeting nature of opportunities at the elite level. “You have to take advantage of it because it could be your last,” he remarked. “The first one was special, and then after a while, I wouldn’t say I took it for granted; I didn’t appreciate it as much. Being away makes you appreciate what it is. It’s been a very good learning phase being away; I’m just going to enjoy every moment.”
