Oxfordshire School Launches Immersive Tech for SEND Students

Innovative Approach to Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs

A secondary school is embracing cutting-edge technology to provide tailored support for students with special educational needs (SEN). Aureus School has recently introduced two SPINI VR Chairs, which are designed to assist pupils with sensory and neurological differences in re-regulating their emotions and returning to learning more efficiently throughout the day.

The implementation of this technology was made possible by a £9,990 grant from the Didcot Powerhouse Fund. This funding has enabled the school to integrate immersive virtual reality and 360-degree sensory movement into its support systems. The SPINI VR Chairs are particularly beneficial for students with conditions such as ADHD, autism, and other sensory-processing challenges.

Kirsty Rogers, the headteacher at Aureus School, expressed her gratitude for the support received from the Didcot Powerhouse Fund. She highlighted the significance of the grant in bringing these chairs into the school environment. According to Ms. Rogers, the SPINI VR Chair is specifically designed to offer quick and effective sensory regulation through gentle 360-degree movement and immersive, multi-sensory VR experiences.

“This technology will help our students reset, refocus, and return to learning more rapidly and confidently,” she said. She also emphasized that with the increasing demand for special educational needs support, particularly at Aureus School, this initiative represents a significant breakthrough in aiding student regulation and enhancing access to learning.

The grant was successfully secured through an application submitted by the Friends of Aureus School. Nicola Brotherton, who played a key role in the application process, noted that investing in innovative and cost-effective SEN technologies like the SPINI Chair strengthens the school’s ability to support neurodiverse students.

She added, “It will transform students’ experiences by minimising lost learning, lessen anxiety, and improve overall academic outcomes.”

Aureus School is part of the GLF Schools multi-academy trust, which focuses on providing high-quality education across various communities. The introduction of the SPINI VR Chairs is a testament to the school’s commitment to innovation and inclusivity in education.

Benefits of the SPINI VR Chairs

  • Sensory Regulation: The chairs offer a controlled environment where students can engage in calming sensory experiences.
  • Improved Focus: By helping students reset and refocus, the technology supports better concentration during lessons.
  • Enhanced Learning Access: Students with sensory and neurological differences can access learning more effectively, leading to improved academic performance.
  • Anxiety Reduction: The immersive experiences can help reduce anxiety, creating a more positive learning environment.

Future Prospects

The success of the SPINI VR Chairs at Aureus School could serve as a model for other institutions looking to implement similar technologies. As the demand for SEN support continues to grow, the integration of such innovative tools may become increasingly common in educational settings.

By investing in these advanced solutions, schools can better meet the diverse needs of their students, ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to thrive. The ongoing collaboration between schools, local funding bodies, and community organizations is essential in driving forward these initiatives and fostering an inclusive educational landscape.
