A Glimmer of Hope for Lucas Perri
After a remarkable performance in the FA Cup semi-final against West Ham, Lucas Perri was seen celebrating with his supporters, his smile as wide as the Wembley arch. This match is likely to be the next time Perri makes an appearance for Leeds United, as the high-profile summer signing continues to play second fiddle to Karl Darlow, the Wales international who has been entrusted with the number one jersey.
Since Leeds’ 4-3 loss at Newcastle in early January, Perri has found himself relegated to the number two position. This situation mirrors what happened around this time last year during the closing stages of the Championship title-winning campaign. The Brazilian goalkeeper has struggled this season, often appearing unsure and making costly mistakes that have cost him his place in the starting line-up.
The question now is whether Perri’s penalty heroics will be enough to convince manager Jesse Marsch to stick with him when Leeds return to Premier League action in just under a week’s time with a game against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Manager’s Perspective on Perri’s Performance
Jesse Marsch’s assessment of Perri’s display against West Ham suggests that the goalkeeper may not be back in the starting line-up just yet. “I am delighted for Lucas, he’s not had the easiest year,” was the opening gambit from the Leeds boss. So far so good.
However, the issue is what followed. Marsch added, “He didn’t have the game time he wished for. Lucas did have situations where he could have done better but to show resilience is a perfect example of how we should be.”
Marsch was not really endorsing Perri’s chances of a return to the number one shirt. There were mistakes outside of the shootout, with the Hammers’ disallowed goal for offside sparing Perri some embarrassment.
Perri is likely to keep his place for the semi-final against Chelsea, having played in the last three rounds. His only appearances since the Newcastle game have been in the FA Cup.
Perri’s Potential and Physical Presence
There’s no denying that Perri has something special about him. He is a big physical presence, and there are areas where he can improve, as Marsch knows. Former Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford is one person who is impressed by the Brazilian goalkeeper.
Speaking after the FA Cup win at West Ham, Beckford told TNT Sports, “What a goalkeeper. He’s Brazil’s number three; the two players that are ahead of him are Ederson and Alisson. When you look at the size of Lucas Perri, he’s humongous. His wingspan is humongous. He was standing in front of the goal, he was standing in front of the goal with his arms stretched above him and his wrists were almost touching the crossbar! Great penalty saving and great awareness.”
Looking Ahead
As Leeds United prepares for their upcoming matches, the focus will be on whether Perri can maintain his form and prove himself as a reliable goalkeeper. While his recent performances have shown promise, there is still work to be done to secure his place in the starting line-up.
With the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea on the horizon, Perri will have another opportunity to shine and potentially cement his position as the club’s number one goalkeeper. The coming weeks will be crucial for his career, and fans will be watching closely to see if he can continue to deliver the performances that have earned him praise from former players and supporters alike.
