Nottingham Forest Navigates European Scare to Reach Europa League Last 16
Nottingham Forest has successfully navigated a tense second leg against Fenerbahce, securing their passage to the Europa League’s last 16 with a 4-2 aggregate victory. Despite holding a commanding 3-0 lead from the first leg in Istanbul, the English side faced a significant scare at the City Ground, ultimately succumbing to a 2-1 defeat on the night.
The match began under chaotic circumstances, with play halted for over three minutes shortly after kick-off. Forest players were forced to dodge a barrage of fireworks launched onto the pitch from a fervent contingent of approximately 1,500 Fenerbahce supporters.
Fenerbahce, fuelled by the electric atmosphere, seized the momentum early on. In the 22nd minute, they capitalised on a lapse in concentration from a Forest side featuring six changes from their weekend fixture. A swift breakaway saw Sidiki Cherif exploit space down the right flank before delivering a precise pass to Kerem Akturkoglu. The Turkish international calmly collected the ball and unleashed a powerful strike into the net, igniting hopes of a remarkable comeback.
Forest struggled to find their rhythm in the first half. Elliot Anderson came close to an immediate response, weaving into the area and firing narrowly wide from a tight angle. However, the home side’s attacking efforts were largely disjointed, and they were fortunate to only trail by a single goal at the break.
The visitors had several opportunities to extend their lead before half-time. Sidiki Cherif fired into the side netting from a difficult position, and Akturkoglu missed a golden chance to double his tally. After latching onto an errant pass from Omari Hutchinson, Akturkoglu dragged his shot wide of the post. Cherif was then presented with an even clearer opportunity following a clever backheel from Akturkoglu, but his effort was too close to goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.
Recognising the growing threat, Forest manager Vitor Pereira made a decisive triple substitution at the interval, introducing Igor Jesus, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Ola Aina, alongside midfield enforcer Ibrahim Sangare, in an attempt to regain control of the contest.

The tactical reshuffling, however, did little to stem the tide, as Fenerbahce were awarded a penalty just 25 seconds into the second half. Jair Cunha was penalised for tripping Akturkoglu inside the box. The striker stepped up and confidently converted the spot-kick, doubling Fenerbahce’s advantage on the night and narrowing the aggregate deficit to a single goal.
With the tie now precariously poised, the pressure mounted on Nottingham Forest. However, the introduction of fresh legs and the strategic adjustments began to pay dividends. In the 68th minute, the substitutes combined to extinguish Fenerbahce’s comeback aspirations. Ola Aina delivered a pinpoint cross from the right flank, finding Callum Hudson-Odoi at the far post. The winger made no mistake, calmly slotting a low shot into the bottom corner to put Forest back in a commanding position.
Forest had further opportunities to seal their victory in style. Igor Jesus and Omari Hutchinson both broke through on goal, but were thwarted by Fenerbahce custodian Tarik Cetin on each occasion, with their efforts either saved or directed straight at the goalkeeper.
Despite the nervy second-leg performance and the eventual 2-1 defeat, Nottingham Forest had done enough to progress to the last 16 of the Europa League. They now await Friday’s draw, where they will discover their next European opponent, with Real Betis and FC Midtjylland among the potential ties. The resilience shown, particularly in the second half, will be a crucial takeaway for Pereira’s squad as they continue their continental campaign.
