AFL Grand Final 2026: Pop Superstar Set to Ignite Pre-Game Show

Kylie Minogue to Headline AFL Grand Final 2026 Pre-Game Entertainment

Get ready, Australia! Global pop icon Kylie Minogue is set to grace the stage and headline the highly anticipated AFL Grand Final 2026 pre-game entertainment. The Melbourne-born superstar confirmed the exciting news on Sunday, marking a triumphant return to her hometown for what promises to be an unforgettable performance.

The electrifying spectacle will take place in September at the hallowed grounds of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), affectionately known to fans as “the ‘G.” Minogue, 57, expressed her overwhelming enthusiasm for the gig, stating, “The AFL Grand Final at Melbourne’s one and only, forever iconic MCG? Yes please!”

She added, “As a Melburnian, I’m so excited to be coming home for the biggest day in the Aussie sporting calendar. I’ll not only be performing, but I’ll be one of 100,000 fans at the ‘G, watching the wonder that is footy.”

Minogue’s booking continues a tradition of securing world-class talent for the AFL’s premier event. Her performance follows a string of high-profile international and local artists who have captivated crowds in recent years.

Last year, American rapper Snoop Dogg took centre stage at the 2025 AFL Grand Final, sharing the spotlight with celebrated Australian artists Tash Sultana and Baker Boy. The year prior, in 2024, the pre-game entertainment was equally star-studded, featuring American pop sensation Katy Perry alongside Australian music stalwarts Tina Arena, Cody Simpson, and Christine Anu.

Grand Final Start Time Remains Traditional

The announcement of Minogue’s headline performance comes amidst discussions about a potential shift in the Grand Final’s traditional 2:30 PM timeslot to a twilight kick-off. Speculation had been rife that a later start, potentially from 5 PM, could have dramatically transformed the pre-match festivities, allowing for an extended halftime break to accommodate a full-scale performance akin to the Super Bowl model. This would have provided a primetime stage for global or marquee acts to truly shine.

The AFL has only experienced twilight or night grand finals on two occasions, both during the COVID-19 pandemic: in 2020 at The Gabba and in 2021 at Optus Stadium.

However, AFL Commission chair Craig Drummond confirmed this week that the traditional 2:30 PM start time will be maintained for the Grand Finals in both 2026 and 2027. The league has stated that there is “no compelling case” to alter the scheduling this season, effectively locking in the classic afternoon start for the next two years.

Despite this decision, the AFL indicated that it will continue to evaluate the merits of a later ball-up as part of broader considerations for the competition’s future.

“Everyone who loves footy has a view on the right start time for our biggest game of the year, and for at least the next two seasons it will remain in its traditional afternoon timeslot at the MCG,” Drummond stated. He elaborated that the Commission deemed it crucial to offer fans and clubs clarity and certainty at this juncture, while simultaneously allowing the AFL to focus on preparations for the introduction of its 19th club in two years.

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon echoed this sentiment, affirming that the decision will provide all stakeholders with the necessary stability for the upcoming two seasons.

The confirmation of the unchanged start time comes as somewhat of a surprise, given the widespread predictions from football experts over the past week suggesting a move towards a twilight fixture. This decision ensures that the iconic AFL Grand Final will continue to be played out under the familiar afternoon sun for the foreseeable future, preserving a cherished tradition for the sport’s devoted fanbase.
