AFL Star Matt Guelfi Steps Out with British Model Freya Tai
One of the AFL’s most eligible bachelors has officially found his match. Essendon midfielder Matt Guelfi has been pictured publicly with his new girlfriend, British model Freya Tai, marking a significant moment for the star who has largely kept his private life under wraps.
The couple made their debut at a high-profile event in Melbourne’s CBD recently – the 9MILE x Baby Driver pop-up launch. Guelfi, long considered one of the league’s most sought-after single stars, appeared at ease and confident as he arrived with Tai. The brunette model is understood to be signed with several international modelling agencies, adding to her already impressive profile.

This public appearance signifies a new chapter for Guelfi, who returned to full training with the Bombers after undergoing hamstring surgery in February. The event served as the first official outing for the pair, who have reunited in Melbourne.
A Star-Studded Debut
The launch event itself was a buzzing affair, attracting a crowd of notable personalities. Among those in attendance were AFL stars Toby Pink and his wife Chloe, Zac Williams and his wife Rachel, and Jo Weston. The Detroit-style pizza pop-up provided a lively and fitting backdrop for the couple’s public unveiling, complete with delicious food and expertly crafted cocktails.

A Shift in Guelfi’s Public Persona
The relationship reveal marks a notable shift for the 29-year-old Guelfi, who has previously maintained a more private stance on his personal life. Earlier in his career, during a club Q&A session, Guelfi offered a candid glimpse into his personality, admitting that romance was a source of apprehension for him. When asked about his greatest fears, he once revealed, “Getting into a relationship.”
Beyond his football commitments, Guelfi has been steadily building his profile in other areas. He’s a familiar face at major events, including the Melbourne Formula One Grand Prix, and has also lent his image to local brands for modelling work.

Bombers Face Intense Scrutiny Amidst Season Struggles
While Guelfi is experiencing success and happiness off the field, his club, the Essendon Bombers, is currently navigating a challenging period. The team has come under significant criticism for a disappointing start to the season, with former club great Matthew Lloyd leading the charge.
Lloyd has been vocal in his assessment, describing the Bombers as a demoralised unit that is failing to perform to AFL standards. This harsh critique follows heavy losses to the Hawks and Power, leaving the team winless and facing mounting pressure.
Coach Brad Scott has acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, admitting a lack of defensive intensity. “There’s no doubt we’re demoralised,” Scott stated, adding that the group is “not hard-nosed enough in defence.” He indicated that these issues are widespread across the entire playing group.

Alarming Form and Lack of Belief
The timing of these struggles so early in the season is a particular concern for Lloyd. He has labelled the team’s form as “alarming,” commenting that they have “played with no passion… it’s not AFL level, it’s not AFL standard.”
Lloyd believes the Bombers are suffering from a significant deficit in confidence, lacking the necessary belief, intent, and understanding of their game plan. He further pointed out an over-reliance on younger players, with insufficient impact coming from the senior leadership group.

With the Bombers facing an upcoming clash against North Melbourne, a team also battling for consistency, the pressure on Essendon is set to intensify. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the team can turn their season around.
