Aussie Test Great Eyed for Thunder Coaching Role

Shane Watson and Dan Christian Headline Shortlist for Sydney Thunder Coaching Role

Cricket NSW is undergoing a significant shake-up in its coaching appointments, with former Test all-rounder Shane Watson emerging as a strong contender for the Sydney Thunder’s head coaching position. This potential appointment marks a major step into senior coaching for Watson, who has a wealth of experience as a player and has recently been making his mark in T20 leagues abroad.

The shake-up comes after a period of considerable change, with Cricket NSW deciding to separate the head coaching roles for their state and Big Bash League (BBL) teams. This strategic shift has opened up not only the Thunder’s top job but also that of their cross-town rivals, the Sydney Sixers. Both clubs are currently in the midst of interviewing candidates to fill the voids left by Trevor Bayliss at the Thunder and Greg Shipperd at the Sixers.

Sources indicate that Shane Watson and the highly experienced Dan Christian are both on the shortlist for the Sydney Thunder. The club mutually parted ways with Trevor Bayliss last month after a five-season tenure. Meanwhile, Matthew Mott, the celebrated T20 World Cup-winning coach, is reportedly in contention for the Sydney Sixers’ head coaching role.

The decision to create distinct coaching positions for the state teams and their BBL counterparts has, according to industry insiders, attracted a high calibre of candidates for the T20 coaching roles.

Shane Watson’s Coaching Credentials

Shane Watson, a familiar face to Thunder fans from his playing days, has been actively involved in coaching internationally. He currently holds the position of head coach for the Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League. In his two seasons at the helm, Watson has overseen a significant turnaround for the franchise, guiding them from the bottom of the ladder to a fourth-place finish and then to the runner-up position.

His coaching experience also extends to the United States, where he has spent three seasons coaching the San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket. Under his guidance, the team has reached the semi-finals in two of those seasons, including the 2024-25 campaign. An appointment for Watson at the Thunder would undoubtedly bring a significant injection of star power to the club, which experienced a challenging season last year despite a strong individual performance from captain David Warner. Should Watson take the reins, he would find himself working alongside emerging talent Sam Konstas, who is represented by Watson’s wife, Lee Watson.

Dan Christian: A Player’s Perspective on Coaching

Dan Christian, a former Australian representative in both ODI and T20 formats, has transitioned into coaching since retiring from playing. He has served as an assistant coach under Trevor Bayliss, gaining valuable insights into the intricacies of top-level coaching. Christian boasts an impressive record as a domestic T20 title winner and is recognised as one of Australia’s most seasoned campaigners in the shortest format of the game, having competed in numerous leagues worldwide.

Matthew Mott’s T20 Coaching Prowess

Matthew Mott is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most accomplished T20 coaches. He led the Australian women’s national team to successive T20 World Cup victories in 2018 and 2020, with the latter triumph celebrated on home soil at a packed MCG. Mott’s coaching success continued on the international stage when he guided England to T20 World Cup glory in Australia in 2022.

His coaching resume also includes success at the domestic level. Mott coached the men’s state team to a Sheffield Shield title in the 2007/08 season and clinched the now-defunct Champions League T20 competition in 2009. He was also part of Greg Shipperd’s coaching panel that steered the Sydney Sixers to the BBL final this past season. Last year, Mott also took on the coaching role for the Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

Other Coaching Movements and Considerations

While the focus is on the BBL coaching appointments, Cricket NSW has also made decisions regarding its state coaching roles. Former Australian wicketkeeper and New South Wales stalwart Brad Haddin is considered a strong favourite for the NSW Blues head coaching position. However, Haddin has indicated he is not interested in the T20 coaching roles, citing potential conflicts with his media commitments for Triple M and Fox Cricket.

Cricket NSW chief Lee Germon made a decisive move in January, parting ways with Greg Shipperd as the coach for both the NSW Blues and the Sydney Sixers. This decision came just days after the Sixers’ BBL final defeat, with Germon stating the organisation felt it was “time to move in a new direction to give the Blues and Sixers the best chance to win titles.” Shipperd, demonstrating his commitment, continued to coach out the season and recently led the Blues to victory in the National One-Day Cup.
