Australia’s most frustrating car key is gone!

Leapmotor Reverses Keyless Entry Decision

Leapmotor has made a significant change regarding its keyless entry system, which has been the subject of criticism in Australia and other markets. The company will now introduce physical keys on all future models, marking a shift from its previous approach.

The keyless system, which uses a credit card-style key that must be held near the wing mirror to start or turn off the car, then placed on a wireless phone charger to select a gear, has drawn complaints from customers. In response, Leapmotor has decided to implement a more traditional solution.

While the card-style key will still be available as a backup, it will now be accompanied by a mobile phone application and a new physical key. This change will apply to all new models and model year updates.

Future Models and Market Strategy

As Leapmotor continues to expand its presence in Australia, several upcoming models are generating interest. One of the most anticipated is the 2026 Leapmotor B10, which could be followed by more affordable electric cars aimed at competing with models like the Geely EX2 and BYD Atto 1. Additionally, the brand is reportedly working on an off-road vehicle that could challenge the Toyota LandCruiser.

Another model under development is the 2026 Leapmotor A05, a budget-friendly electric hatchback that has already been revealed in Chinese markets. It is expected to compete with vehicles such as the BYD Dolphin, GWM Ora, and MG4.

In 2027, the Leapmotor D19 will debut, featuring the largest battery of any plug-in hybrid on the market. This model is set to challenge competitors like the GWM Wey V9X and BYD Great Tang.

Leadership Comments on the Change

Francesco Giacalone, the Global head of Brand Strategy, Product and Marketing at Leapmotor International, has commented on the decision to reintroduce physical keys. He noted that while the key card is no longer the primary method, it will still serve as a backup option.

“We are keeping the key card and the physical key because the key card can be a convenient backup that you always have in your wallet,” Giacalone said. “You can open the car using three options: your phone, the key, or the card.”

He also mentioned that existing models currently on sale will receive the physical key through model-year updates, which typically occur during the European summer.

Current Models and Updates

Both the Leapmotor B10 and C10 use the key card system, supported by a mobile app. However, both models are expected to include a physical key in their upcoming model-year updates. The B05, which is set to launch later this year, will also come with a physical key.

This change reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry, where manufacturers are responding to consumer feedback by incorporating more traditional features into modern vehicles. By offering multiple ways to access and operate their cars, Leapmotor aims to provide greater convenience and flexibility for its customers.
