Manly Sea Eagles Eyeing Coaching Shake-Up Amidst Early Season Struggles
The Manly Sea Eagles are in the midst of a significant coaching transition, having parted ways with Anthony Seibold just three games into the National Rugby League (NRL) season. The swift decision, stemming from a string of home losses, has left supporters reeling and the club scrambling to find a permanent replacement. In the interim, former player and current assistant coach Kieran Foran has been handed the reins until the end of the year. However, a familiar face from the club’s glory days, Matt Ballin, has emerged as a frontrunner and a popular choice among the fanbase to take over the full-time coaching role.
Ballin, a decorated former Sea Eagles hooker who tasted premiership success twice with the club, boasts valuable coaching experience. He previously worked under the tutelage of Des Hasler at Manly before making a move to the Brisbane Broncos in 2021. His tenure at the Broncos has clearly impressed, with many backing him for a head coaching opportunity.
Broncos Captain Endorses Ballin’s Coaching Prowess
Brisbane Broncos captain Adam Reynolds has been vocal in his support for Matt Ballin, believing he possesses all the qualities necessary to succeed as a head coach. Reynolds highlighted Ballin’s dedication and leadership, stating, “He’s a great coach. He’s done a lot of great things for us at the Broncos and leads by example week after week. He’s got a big future… If he gets the opportunity, I am sure he will be ready to take it.”
Reynolds further elaborated on Ballin’s coaching philosophy, noting his meticulous attention to detail and deep understanding of the game. “He just does all the little things right. He understands the game, he’s played at the top level for a long time. He’s done his apprenticeship under a few different coaches now, so he knows different styles as well and how to get the best out of players.” This endorsement from a key player within the Broncos camp underscores the high regard in which Ballin is held.
Michael Maguire’s Stance on Ballin’s Potential Move
Adding to the speculation, Brisbane Broncos head coach Michael Maguire has indicated he would not obstruct Matt Ballin’s path if the Manly Sea Eagles were to approach him for their head coaching position. Maguire expressed a desire for his staff to pursue opportunities that align with their career aspirations. “I haven’t even spoken to Matty, but I want all my staff to excel in whatever it is they do and whatever they want to do,” Maguire commented. “If those things arise, we will talk about it. Matty is a great human, great person. And those things come to people who work hard. If it’s the right time, it’s the right time.”
Broncos Face Coaching Dilemma
Should Manly make a formal approach for Ballin, it could present a significant challenge for the Broncos. The club is already navigating a period of uncertainty following reports of assistant coach Ben Te’o’s resignation, which were rumoured to be linked to a disagreement with Maguire. Losing another key assistant like Ballin, especially during their premiership defence, would undoubtedly impact the team’s stability. This situation could leave the Broncos in a precarious position as they aim to replicate their previous success.

Manly’s Rationale for Seibold’s Departure
Manly chairman Scott Penn shed light on the club’s decision to part ways with Anthony Seibold after a mere three rounds. Penn explained that the club had conducted a review at the end of the previous season and identified a lack of progress and unrealised potential within the squad. “So, during the review process at the end of last year, we said, ‘Look, we didn’t make finals, we weren’t happy about that. We thought there was more potential in the team, so we really want to turn that around in the ’26 season, and we didn’t see that progression,” Penn stated.
The chairman also pointed to the unprecedented nature of their recent home losses. “We lost three games here at home for the first time in 20 years…doesn’t meet our club standards. We could have said, ‘yeah, we’ll give you another three games’, but we just didn’t want to risk it. We don’t want to be 0-6. We need to win now.” This statement underscores the club’s urgency to rectify their on-field performance and instil a winning culture. The Sea Eagles will be hoping their search for a new head coach leads to a period of stability and renewed success.
