Cancer Bride’s Hour-Long Wedding: “I Do” From Hospice

A Love Story Unfolds: Wedding Celebrates Resilience Amidst Heartbreaking News

In a poignant display of love and courage, Liz Kavanagh and Kieran O’Malley have tied the knot, marking a beautiful new chapter just one day after sharing the deeply personal news of Liz’s move to hospice care. Their wedding, a testament to their enduring bond, took place on Friday, March 27th, a joyous occasion meticulously, and remarkably, planned by Kieran in under an hour.

The couple, who became engaged in October 2025, found themselves facing an unimaginable challenge when Liz was diagnosed with colon cancer in October 2024. Tragically, just a week before their wedding, they received the devastating news that Liz’s cancer had spread beyond medical intervention, leaving her doctors focused solely on her comfort. Liz moved into hospice care on Tuesday, a difficult transition for any individual and their loved ones.

Despite the profound sadness surrounding their circumstances, Liz and Kieran chose to celebrate their love with a civil ceremony in Galway. In a touching “full-circle moment,” their reception was held at the HYDE Bar, the very venue where they had joyfully celebrated their engagement the previous year. Liz looked radiant in a stunning white gown, adorned with delicate lacy detailing, complemented by a veil and a bouquet of soft, pastel-coloured flowers, creating a vision of bridal elegance.

Kieran shared a heartfelt post alongside a wedding picture, announcing their new status: “Today we officially tied the knot and are now Mr & Mrs O’Malley. We had a great day surrounded by family and friends and it was all that we could have asked for.”

The swift and beautiful organisation of the wedding was a remarkable feat, highlighting the incredible support network that rallied around Liz and Kieran. Kieran acknowledged the collaborative effort, stating that “it takes a village.” He recounted the touching story of how he reached out to Canella Lane to arrange Liz’s wedding dress. Initially thinking they specialised in party wear, Kieran was overwhelmed by the responsiveness of Sienna, who presented him with twenty options from a wedding dress supplier.

In a delightful twist, Liz’s friends were present that evening and were tasked with choosing the dress. “Liz’s friends were over that night, and I gave them the phone and they picked the dress between the four of them,” Kieran explained. He humorously recalled their playful insistence on keeping the dress a secret from him. “I was like, ‘I have to see it, I’m ordering it’,” he laughed, admitting he had only seen it online. A tailor even made a visit to Galway Hospice the day before the wedding to ensure the dress was perfectly fitted and ready for Liz.

Kieran spoke movingly about the overwhelming support from their family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. “It’s such an incredibly difficult time, but the fact that everyone is coming in and talking to Liz and myself in the last week about our wedding and not about the difficulties that we’re going through has been just such a lift and such a positive thing for us,” he shared. “To be focusing on something so beautiful has been absolutely fantastic.” He added, “Liz is in an incredible battle, and we decided that we don’t have something to look forward to, so we decided to get married as soon as possible.”

The decision to marry was made just the previous Friday, and within an astonishing hour, Kieran had the entire wedding organised. “I’m very proud of this, and I’m telling everyone this,” he quipped. His background in hospitality proved invaluable, providing him with the connections needed to swiftly arrange a celebrant and book the venue. He also reached out to a florist friend.

“We spoke to an event planner, Fiona, who is going to do all the decorations. It’s in HYDE Bar. The service and the reception is in the same venue as we had our engagement party, so it’s a special location to us that kind of brings this full circle,” Kieran elaborated.

The celebration was further enhanced by the presence of friends who offered their talents and support. Kieran mentioned that his “very good friend,” Colin Fahy, would be singing at the wedding. The wedding party comprised 80 of their closest friends and family, including Jennifer Wrynne, who herself had recently navigated a personal battle with cancer. Jennifer shared her joy on social media, posting, “What a magical day celebrating two of my favourite people – Liz & Kieran. So special from start to finish.” Comedian Alan Clarke was also among the attendees, expressing his pride in witnessing Kieran on his wedding day.

Even the wedding bands held a special significance, stemming from a chance encounter. Kieran explained how people they met during their travels, upon learning of Liz’s health struggles, offered their assistance. A couple who owned a jewellers in Galway stepped forward and created their wedding bands. “Liz’s sister-in-law tried on the rings, so then we came back to the hospital with samples, and we picked the two rings there in the hospital bed. On the day, it just all kind of came together,” Kieran recounted.

Kieran expressed his profound admiration for his bride, Liz, whom he met on Hinge five years ago. “I’m really proud to be marrying such a special lady. The bravery she has shown throughout this has been absolutely incredible, and the reaction we’ve got has just been a testament to the person she is,” he said. “She’s such an incredible person, and people have been genuinely incredible. One friend rang the other day and said, ‘What’s your address? I’m sending over two cleaners to your house.’ And people just cannot do enough for us. It has been amazing.”

The story of Liz and Kieran is a powerful reminder of the strength of love and human connection in the face of adversity. Their wedding, though born from tragic circumstances, stands as a beacon of hope and a celebration of a love that continues to shine brightly.
