A remarkable display of courage and community spirit unfolded at a Central Coast shopping centre yesterday, as a group of shoppers and staff bravely intervened to apprehend a woman allegedly wielding a knife and threatening bystanders. The incident, which occurred around 5pm on Goobarabah Avenue in Lake Haven, saw police called to the scene following reports of a dangerous confrontation.
Upon arrival, officers were informed that a woman had been seen brandishing a knife and making threats to stab members of the public. The swift actions of those present, however, prevented the situation from escalating further.
The Moment of Intervention
Witness accounts and video footage from the scene paint a vivid picture of the dramatic events. In one clip, a woman is seen attempting to de-escalate the situation with a calm approach, while the alleged assailant holds a knife perilously close to her face.
Elluka Banno, a store assistant present during the ordeal, recounted the fear she felt, not for herself, but for others. “I was scared, moreso for the other lady. I was scared about other people, about what I was going to see, not for myself,” she told reporters. Banno went on to commend the collective bravery of those who stepped in. “Our community that we have around here, like the workers that we have, make it feel so much safer. They’re so brave.”
Community Steps Up
The intervention was a multi-faceted effort. Security personnel and members of the public worked together to disarm and restrain the 38-year-old woman. Josh Monk, a hairdresser who was part of the group that acted, explained his mindset during the crisis. “My thought was to pick up a chair, because ultimately that’s the best thing for self-defence in that moment,” he stated.
Monk elaborated on the internal drive to act, questioning the alternative: “If you didn’t step up in that moment, then how are you ever going to step up for your family? Do you know what I mean? So that was something that was just going in my head, and it has to be done.”
Aftermath and Charges
While the intervention successfully prevented further harm, a 22-year-old man sustained a finger injury during the incident. Fortunately, there were no other reported injuries.
The woman involved was initially taken to Wyong Hospital for an assessment. Following her release from the hospital, she was transported to Wyong Police Station. She has since been charged with three offences: affray, using a knife in a public place causing fear of safety, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The woman was refused bail and was scheduled to appear in court today.
A Community Praised
The actions of the shoppers and staff involved have been widely commended, highlighting the importance of community solidarity in times of crisis. Their bravery serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when individuals come together to protect one another. The incident, while concerning, ultimately showcased the best of the Central Coast community.
