Christy Carlson Romano’s Positive Cancer Screening News

Former Disney Channel star Christy Carlson Romano has shared a deeply personal and emotional update with her fans, revealing a positive cancer screening. The 41-year-old actor, known for her roles in beloved shows like Even Stevens and The Even Stevens Movie, opened up in a candid social media video about her family’s history with the disease and her own recent health scare.

Romano explained that cancer has touched her family profoundly. Both of her parents have battled the disease, and her maternal grandmother tragically passed away from lung cancer. This personal history prompted her and her husband, Brendan Rooney, to proactively undergo cancer screenings.

“My husband’s [results] came back completely negative,” Romano shared with a sigh of relief during the video. However, her own results were not as clear. “Mine did not come back negative,” she revealed, her voice tinged with emotion.

The Road Ahead: PET Scans and the Fight for Coverage

Following the concerning screening, Romano’s next step is to undergo a PET scan. This diagnostic imaging technique will help doctors pinpoint the exact location of any potential cancer within her body. The actor also disclosed that she is currently “fighting with companies” to ensure that the crucial PET scan is covered by insurance, highlighting the financial and logistical hurdles that can accompany serious health concerns.

The emotional weight of her diagnosis became evident as Romano became tearful, reflecting on the recent passing of actor James Van Der Beek. Van Der Beek tragically died last week following a diagnosis of colorectal cancer in 2023.

“I live in Austin, and I was able to meet James Van Der Beek a bunch. His family’s amazing. He’s a pillar of our community in Texas,” Romano said, her voice wavering as she spoke about the late Dawson’s Creek star. Van Der Beek, who resided in Texas with his wife and their six children, was known for his philanthropic efforts and dedication to supporting various charities. “They always were raising money for the most amazing charities, and he’s not with us anymore. Cancer is everywhere. Which is why I got this test.”

Finding Strength Amidst Uncertainty

Despite the daunting news, Romano is determined to maintain a positive outlook. She expressed her intention to temporarily set aside her worries about the screening results and focus instead on her upcoming opportunities, including the anticipated release of her memoir.

“Very vulnerable time for me,” the former Even Stevens actor admitted. She also drew a parallel to a recent traumatic event, mentioning, “About 367 days since I got shot in the face,” referring to a serious injury she sustained near her eye while participating in a clay pigeon shooting event for her husband’s birthday.

Romano conveyed a strong sense of faith, stating, “It’s time to have a strong sense of faith and know that it’s in God’s hands, most of it.” She acknowledged that some might perceive her reaction as an overreaction, but she firmly believes in the gravity of the situation, especially as a mother to two young daughters. “I’m sure people think I’m overreacting, but I’m not, because cancer is pretty serious, and I have two little girls.”

A Pillar of Support

The Instagram video concluded with Romano pledging to “keep fighting for answers” and expressing her deep gratitude for the unwavering support she has received from her family. Her husband, Brendan Rooney, was quick to offer his love and reassurance in the comments section of her post.

“You got this my beautiful wife. We will figure this out and destroy any problem that comes your way. I love you beyond words,” Rooney wrote, showcasing the strong bond and united front they present in the face of this challenge.
