Claire Foy’s CBeebies Bedtime Story Debut

Claire Foy Joins CBeebies Bedtime Stories to Champion Reading

Acclaimed British actress Claire Foy is the latest high-profile personality to lend her voice to CBeebies’ beloved Bedtime Stories series, as the BBC embarks on a year-long initiative to reignite a passion for reading. Foy, 41, has taken a seat in the iconic yellow chair to record a special episode as part of the broadcaster’s “Once Upon a Time” celebration.

This initiative is inspired by an exhibition at the British Library and coincides with the National Year of Reading, aiming to highlight the profound importance and sheer joy of literature.

On Friday, March 27th, at 6 pm, Foy will be reading “Stop! That’s Not My Story!”, a creative reimagining of traditional fairytales penned by Smriti Halls. This particular story promises a fresh perspective, offering a playful twist on familiar narratives that will undoubtedly captivate young imaginations.

Foy expressed her enthusiasm for participating, stating, “I think it is really important to introduce storytelling, whether that’s in books or audiobooks, to children as early as humanly possible. I think it creates a world of curiosity and imagination that is really important to encourage.” She elaborated on the transformative power of stories, explaining their ability to transport children beyond their immediate circumstances. “Books and stories offer you the opportunity as a child to imagine yourself somewhere other than where you are,” she noted.

Foy further emphasised the broader impact of reading, highlighting how it can foster empathy and understanding. “Whatever your upbringing or wherever you are it is really important to have a different perspective and see the world in a different way and books and storytelling allow children to do that. Then hopefully they will grow up to be very curious and interested adults.”

Foy joins an impressive roster of global stars who have contributed their talents to the 10-minute program, a cherished staple for families across the United Kingdom. Previous storytellers have included musical icons Sir Elton John and Dolly Parton, actor Idris Elba, Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas, pop sensation Harry Styles, and beloved actor Chris Evans. Just last month, audiences were treated to readings by Nick Jonas and Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, showcasing the wide appeal and diverse talent drawn to the series.

“Once Upon a Time”: A Celebration of Stories

The BBC’s “Once Upon a Time” initiative is more than just a collection of celebrity readings. According to the broadcaster’s Chief Content Officer, it represents a core element of the BBC’s mission. “Once Upon a Time is a wonderful celebration of everything the BBC stands for: imagination, connection and storytelling for everyone,” they stated.

The year-long programme promises a rich tapestry of content designed to underscore the significance of reading, especially in the current climate. “Across the year, we’re bringing audiences a rich mix of programmes and events that highlight the joy and importance of reading at a time when it matters more than ever, and inspire families to discover new stories, revisit old favourites and share those moments together.”

Collaborations with institutions like the British Library are central to this effort. “Working with partners like the British Library, we’re proud to shine a light on the extraordinary power stories have to help us escape, to comfort us, and to connect us with each other. Whether you’re picking up a book, visiting your local library or simply enjoying a story at bedtime, we hope this celebration encourages everyone to find a little magic in reading this year.”

Beyond the Storybook: Claire Foy’s Personal Health Journey

In a separate development, Claire Foy recently shared personal details about her health, revealing a significant lifestyle change driven by a surprising discovery. Last month, she disclosed that she had given up caffeine after learning she had been living with a parasite for five years.

The actress suspected something was amiss when she experienced unexplained weight loss. Seeking medical advice, she was informed of the parasitic infection. Appearing on the “Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware” podcast, Foy explained that she contracted the parasite during a trip to Morocco.

“At least five years,” she recounted, describing the parasite as travelling in pairs. “And they travel as a pair. I got told by the doctor, gross, absolutely rank. It’s disgusting anyway.” This diagnosis necessitated a dietary overhaul. “So that’s why I gave up caffeine,” she explained. “Because I had to give it up. I basically had to go on this diet, and because I didn’t want to take, like, really hardcore antibiotics and stuff like that, I took all this little gross stuff, and part of that was giving up caffeine.”

Foy also revealed that she has adopted a gluten-free and sugar-free diet due to an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation. She likened the revelation to being on a reality TV show, admitting, “This is my big secret, I feel like I’m in The Traitors or something, and I’m letting everyone know that I’m related to someone!” She clarified that while she generally avoids gluten and sugar, exceptions are made for dining out. “So I don’t actually eat gluten or sugar [..] except when I go out for dinner. It doesn’t have an impact on me. It’s just because I have an autoimmune condition, so I should avoid anything which causes more inflammation.”
