Cowboys Stage Stunning Comeback Against Storm in Townsville Thriller
The North Queensland Cowboys have ignited their home crowd in Townsville with a remarkable eight-minute scoring blitz, snatching a dramatic victory from the Melbourne Storm. Trailing with just over ten minutes remaining, the Cowboys dug deep, unleashing a torrent of three tries to overturn a deficit and secure a memorable win.
The Round 4 action in the NRL season also saw the Penrith Panthers continue their dominant unbeaten run, while the Newcastle Knights secured a hard-fought away victory.
In Townsville, the Cowboys initially burst out of the blocks with an early lead. Tries from Jake Clifford and Braidon Burns had the home side in a commanding position.
However, the Melbourne Storm, known for their resilience, responded with vigour. By halftime, they had wrestled back the advantage, with Will Warbrick crossing for two tries and Sualauvi Faalogo adding another. The Storm continued to press their advantage in the second half, with Warbrick proving a handful for the Cowboys’ defence. He went on to score a remarkable four tries in the match, and despite a lone effort from Murray Taulagi, the Cowboys found themselves trailing with just 12 minutes left on the clock.
It was at this crucial juncture that the Cowboys’ star players stepped up. Spearheaded by the dynamic Scott Drinkwater, the influential Tom Dearden, and the composed Jake Clifford, the team launched an incredible offensive surge. In a breathtaking eight-minute period, Sam McIntyre, Heilum Luki, and Braidon Burns all touched down, completing a stunning turnaround and leaving the Storm shell-shocked.
Cowboys coach Todd Payten expressed his elation with his team’s performance, highlighting their mental fortitude. “Really pleased with our game the last couple of weeks and it is going in the right direction,” Payten commented. “We showed composure, some grit and fight, and belief.”
Conversely, Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy conveyed his frustration at his team’s inability to close out the game, marking the second consecutive week they have surrendered a significant lead.
Panthers Maintain Unblemished Record; Eels Suffer Injury Blow
Elsewhere in Round 4, the Penrith Panthers cemented their status as the NRL’s sole undefeated team with a comprehensive 48-20 demolition of the Parramatta Eels. The victory, however, was marred by a significant injury concern for the Eels, with star fullback Isaiah Iongi feared to have sustained a syndesmosis injury.
The Panthers asserted their dominance early, with co-captain Nathan Cleary orchestrating a devastating 18-0 lead within the opening 15 minutes. By halftime, they had extended their advantage to a commanding 30-4.
The match took a worrying turn for Parramatta just after the break when hooker Mitch Kenny was involved in a tackle that saw Iongi go down. This incident echoes a similar concern from a previous match, where a key Eels player suffered an injury from a hip-drop tackle. Eels coach Jason Ryles confirmed the severity of the situation, stating, “Izzy is a suspected syndesmosis so someone else gets an opportunity.”
Knights Overcome Bulldogs Despite Missing Key Talent
In another Saturday fixture, the Newcastle Knights, despite being without several star players, managed to overcome the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs with a 24-16 victory away from home. Coach Cameron Ciraldo expressed his disappointment with his Bulldogs side’s performance, labelling their decision-making as “soft.”
The Knights established a strong first-half lead, going into the break up 16-0, thanks to a superb hat-trick from Dominic Young. While the Bulldogs mounted a late challenge, Newcastle held on to secure the win.
Newcastle’s victory was particularly impressive given the significant talent they were missing. Key players such as captain Kalyn Ponga and five-eighth Dylan Brown were sidelined through injury, with starting prop Trey Mooney also unavailable due to suspension.
Under new coach Justin Holbrook, the Knights have enjoyed their best start to a season since 2020, boasting a 3-1 record. This win against the Bulldogs, who drew a crowd of 20,572 at Accor Stadium, underscores their early-season form.
However, Ciraldo was far from impressed with his team’s effort. “I’m just disappointed with the performance, we were nowhere near where we wanted to be,” he admitted.
