Derby drama: ACL scares and hip drop woes

Panthers Dominate Eels in Derby Blowout, But Discipline Concerns Linger

Penrith Panthers have once again showcased their championship pedigree, delivering a near-flawless first half against the Parramatta Eels. While their dominant performance reaffirmed their status as premiership frontrunners, two instances of ill-discipline in the second half have cast a slight shadow over their title defence as they gear up for a colossal clash with the Melbourne Storm next Friday.

The Panthers remain the sole undefeated team in the competition, having completely outplayed the Eels in a resounding 48-20 victory at CommBank Stadium. A significant contingent of their passionate fanbase made the journey to witness the fierce local derby, and they were treated to a masterclass in attacking football.

The sheer quality of Penrith’s attack was matched only by the impressive throwback jersey they sported. They established an insurmountable 18-0 lead within the opening 12 minutes, with tries from Isaah Yeo, Isaiah Papali’i, and Casey McLean setting the tone for the match.

Nathan Cleary was once again the orchestrator of Penrith’s success, leading them to their fourth win to start the season. Their victories have come against formidable opponents in the Broncos, Sharks, Roosters, and now the Eels, who collectively have managed to score a mere six tries against the Panthers this year.

If Penrith continues to produce the kind of spectacular team tries, like the one finished by Tom Jenkins, a fifth premiership in six seasons appears almost a foregone conclusion. However, the team will need to address concerns surrounding potential suspensions. Scott Sorensen is currently on report for a high tackle, and Mitch Kenny was sin-binned for a hip-drop tackle, both of which could impact their availability for crucial upcoming matches.

Eels Face Injury Crisis Amidst Heavy Derby Defeat

The loss itself was a significant blow for Parramatta, but the situation was compounded by a concerning injury to star fullback Isaiah Iongi, who was the victim of Kenny’s tackle. Adding to their woes, bench forward Matt Doorey was assisted from the field with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.

This latest setback comes on the heels of the Eels already being dealt a season-ending blow with J’maine Hopgood out due to a hip-drop tackle from last week, which also resulted in Ryan Couchman receiving a four-match ban.

Now, the Eels are anxiously awaiting news on Iongi’s fitness. The livewire fullback attempted to continue playing but ultimately limped from the field, a development that could prove devastating given his impressive start to the season.

To further exacerbate their injury woes, Doorey departed the field with 15 minutes remaining, clutching his left knee after attempting a tackle. Fears are mounting that he may have sustained an ACL injury. This latest blow adds to the sting of a comprehensive derby defeat, marking the second time this season the Eels have been exposed defensively on the edges.

Despite the scoreline, Parramatta showed flashes of attacking brilliance with fluid ball movement that stretched Penrith’s defence. However, converting these periods of possession into points proved a struggle. Josh Addo-Carr managed to score their only points in the first half, a try that came a minute after a certain scoring opportunity was denied by a desperate and crucial cover tackle from Brian To’o.

While Parramatta did manage to tighten their defence in the second half, it was far too late to impact the result. However, they can take some solace in being the first team this year to score multiple tries against the formidable Penrith outfit.

Cleary’s Masterclass Dictates Terms

While his partner is a celebrated Matildas superstar and teammate Dylan Edwards channelled the swagger of a prime Eric Cantona with his popped collar, it was Nathan Cleary who truly commanded the game. He unleashed his full repertoire of kicking skills, bamboozling the Eels with every attempt.

Cleary’s approach was initially simple, with a well-placed midfield bomb allowing halves partner Blaize Talagi to outleap Isaiah Iongi for an early try. Things then took a more unconventional turn.

Cleary’s second try assist was a moment of pure serendipity for any other player, but given his reputation, one couldn’t help but wonder if he had orchestrated a left-foot kick to crash into the padding, setting up Lindsay Smith for a try.

He then delivered a nightmarish grubber kick that forced an error from Iongi, followed by a sensational banana kick with the outside of his boot that nearly resulted in another try just before halftime. To cap off his extraordinary display, Cleary forced another panicked error from the Eels while attempting to prevent a 40/20 kick that ultimately fell short. He swiftly capitalised on the mistake, kicking through for Paul Alamoti to score. It was a performance that simply stopped the opposition in their tracks.
