NRL Match Review Committee Clears Madden and Lemuelu of Charges
The National Rugby League’s (NRL) match review committee has cleared Wests Tigers halfback Jock Madden and Dolphins forward Connelly Lemuelu of any wrongdoing, following incidents that saw both players placed on report during Friday night’s double-header. The NRL confirmed on Saturday morning that no charges would be laid, allowing both players to be available for their respective teams in the upcoming round.
The decision comes after a weekend of action that saw the Wests Tigers secure a surprising victory against the New Zealand Warriors in Auckland, while the Dolphins fell short in their Queensland derby against the Brisbane Broncos.
Madden’s Close Call Against the Warriors
Wests Tigers halfback Jock Madden was placed on report in the second half of the match against the Warriors for what appeared to be a high tackle on opposition player Jackson Ford. The incident occurred near the tryline, with Ford dropping the ball as a result of the contact.
While no penalty was immediately awarded on the field, the Bunker reviewed the tackle. Reports suggest Madden’s arm was wrapped above the shoulder of Ford, who was also falling into the tackle. Despite the retrospective report, the match review committee (MRC) deemed the contact insufficient to warrant a charge.
Madden, who was filling in for the injured Jarome Luai, had a standout performance in the game. His strong showing is expected to see him retain his first-grade position for the next three weeks, a period before Luai is anticipated to make his return to the field. This clearance provides a significant boost for the Tigers, who are looking to build momentum.
Lemuelu’s Crusher Tackle Deemed Not Chargeable
In the later fixture, Dolphins forward Connelly Lemuelu was also placed on report during the first half for a crusher tackle. The incident occurred as the Broncos were attempting to play the ball out of their own territory. The tackle was penalised at the time, and subsequently reported for review.
Lemuelu, a consistent performer for the Dolphins since their inaugural season, was observed to have approached the tackle from the side, rather than directly from above. However, the referees still ruled that pressure was applied to the head and neck area of the Broncos player.
Despite the report, the MRC has decided not to lay any charges against Lemuelu. This means the powerful forward will be free to play next weekend when the Dolphins host the Manly Sea Eagles at home in Redcliffe. The Sea Eagles, currently facing a challenging period, will no doubt be looking to rebound, making this encounter a crucial one for both teams. The Dolphins will be relieved to have Lemuelu available as they aim to solidify their position in the competition.
