Shane Watson in Contention for Sydney Thunder Coaching Gig as Cricket NSW Overhauls Coaching Structure
Cricket NSW is shaking up its coaching landscape, with former Test all-rounder Shane Watson emerging as a strong contender for the Sydney Thunder’s head coaching role. This potential appointment marks a significant step in Watson’s coaching career, representing his first major coaching gig on Australian soil. The move comes as Cricket NSW has decided to separate the head coaching responsibilities for their state and Big Bash League (BBL) teams, a strategic shift following a period of considerable change.
The past few weeks have seen all three top coaching positions become vacant, prompting a thorough review and interview process for both the Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers. Both clubs are actively seeking new leaders after the departures of Trevor Bayliss from the Thunder and Greg Shipperd from the Sixers.
Sources indicate that Shane Watson and the well-travelled Dan Christian are among the leading candidates for the Thunder’s top job. The club mutually parted ways with Trevor Bayliss last month after a five-season tenure. Meanwhile, Matthew Mott, the architect behind England’s T20 World Cup triumph, is reportedly in the running for the Sydney Sixers’ coaching position.
This strategic division of state and BBL coaching roles is believed to have attracted a high-calibre pool of candidates for the T20 teams, according to two sources familiar with the process.
Shane Watson’s Coaching Credentials
Watson, a former player for the Sydney Thunder himself, brings a wealth of international and domestic coaching experience to the table. He is currently the head coach of the Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). In his two seasons with the franchise, he orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, guiding them from last place to a respectable fourth, and subsequently to the runner-up position.
Furthermore, Watson has spent three seasons coaching the San Francisco Unicorns in America’s Major League Cricket (MLC). During his tenure, the team reached the semi-finals in two consecutive seasons (2024-25).
An appointment for Watson would undoubtedly inject a significant dose of star power into the Thunder camp. The team experienced a challenging last season, despite a stellar individual performance from captain David Warner. If Watson takes the helm, he could find himself working alongside emerging talent Sam Konstas, who is managed by Watson’s wife, Lee Watson.
Dan Christian: A T20 Specialist
Dan Christian, a familiar face in Australian cricket having represented the nation in ODI and T20 formats, has also been a key figure in the coaching ranks. Since retiring from playing, he served as an assistant coach under Trevor Bayliss. Christian boasts an impressive record as a winner of domestic T20 titles and is recognised as one of Australia’s most experienced T20 cricketers, with extensive playing experience across numerous global leagues.
Matthew Mott: A Proven Winner
Matthew Mott stands out as one of Australia’s most decorated T20 coaches. He led the Australian women’s national team to incredible success, securing world titles in both 2018 and 2020. The latter victory was particularly memorable, achieved on home soil at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in front of a near-capacity crowd. Mott’s coaching prowess was further showcased when he guided England to T20 World Cup glory in Australia in 2022.

Mott’s coaching journey also includes a successful stint with the men’s state team, leading them to a Sheffield Shield victory in the 2007/08 season and the now-defunct Champions League T20 competition in 2009. He was also part of Greg Shipperd’s coaching panel that guided the Sydney Sixers to the BBL final this year. Last year, Mott was appointed as the coach for the Sixers’ Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) team.
Brad Haddin and the Blues Coaching Role
While the BBL coaching roles are being finalised, former Australian wicketkeeper and New South Wales great Brad Haddin is considered a strong favourite for the NSW Blues head coaching position. However, Haddin has indicated that he is not interested in the T20 coaching roles, as they would conflict with his existing media commitments with Triple M and Fox Cricket.
The Departure of Greg Shipperd
The coaching changes were initiated in January when Cricket NSW chief Lee Germon made the decisive decision to part ways with Greg Shipperd from both the Blues and the Sixers coaching roles. This call came just days after the Sixers’ defeat in the BBL final. Germon stated at the time that “we felt it was time to move in a new direction to give the Blues and Sixers the best chance to win titles.” Shipperd, however, completed the season with the Blues, leading them to a victory in the National One-Day Cup this week.
