Actor Grizz Chapman, known for his role in the popular NBC sitcom 30 Rock, has passed away at the age of 52. The news was shared by his representative, Saideh A. Brown, on Friday (22 May). Although no official cause of death was disclosed, Chapman’s cousin mentioned on social media that he had been battling illness for years.
In 30 Rock, Chapman portrayed Grizz, a character who was the childhood friend and later assistant of Tracy Morgan’s character, Tracy Jordan. His role in the show made him a familiar face to fans, as he appeared in 80 episodes from the first season in 2006 through the seventh and final season in 2012.
Grizz had a dynamic relationship with Liz Lemon, the lead character played by Tina Fey. Beyond 30 Rock, Chapman appeared in several other TV shows such as The Blacklist and Blue Bloods. He also starred in the 2014 film The Cobbler alongside Adam Sandler, and he created his own YouTube sketch series called The Grizz Chronicles.

According to reports, Chapman underwent a kidney transplant in 2010 after requiring dialysis three times a week. He was initially diagnosed with hypertension, which he left untreated, leading to the development of kidney disease. At the time of the transplant, he expressed some nervousness about the process but remained determined.
Speaking to CBS, he said: “I’m a little nervous about the process, but I’m definitely willing and able.” During an interview with TV doctor Dr. Oz while waiting for the transplant, he was asked about his wish. His response was simple yet powerful: “I wanna stay alive.”
