Johnny Ball, 87, faces end of life: “Not long left”

Johnny Ball: A Life of Laughter, Reflection, and Contentment in His Later Years

Children’s television icon Johnny Ball, now 87, has spoken with remarkable candour about his approaching twilight years, admitting he “doesn’t have long left” but is experiencing a profound sense of happiness and contentment. The father of popular presenter Zoe Ball shared his reflections on ageing, health scares, and the enduring values that matter most as he navigates his ninth decade.

“I’m laughing more now than at any other time in my life,” Ball revealed from his home in Buckinghamshire. He even quipped about a recent romantic gesture, stating, “I even bought my wife a bunch of flowers today — the first time I’ve done that in 20 years.” This lighthearted anecdote underscores his current outlook, a blend of humour and a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.

Despite his buoyant spirit, Ball remains grounded in his reality. He candidly told The Mirror, “I have my wife, my dog, my life. I’m very happy with my life. I’m happy that I’m still fit at 87. By rights, I don’t have long left — I want to spend it with a smile on my face.” This perspective is not merely a philosophical stance; it’s one that has shaped his firm views on complex ethical issues, including assisted dying.

Views on Assisted Dying: A Concern for Autonomy

The recent parliamentary debate and subsequent failure of a proposed assisted dying bill in Scotland have brought the issue to the forefront once again. Johnny Ball expressed his deep unease with the concept, not out of a lack of empathy for those suffering from terminal illnesses, but due to a significant concern regarding potential external pressures.

He referenced the ancient Greek scholar Eratosthenes, whose historical account of ending his life by refusing sustenance in old age is, for Ball, a “saddest things I know in history.” Ball elaborated on his apprehension: “Fast forward to now, and I’m always worried that people will sway people. There are too many stories of people realising that money is going to move from one place to another when somebody dies for me to be wholly comfortable about assisted dying.” His worry centres on the possibility of vulnerable individuals being influenced by financial or other external motivations, rather than making a purely autonomous decision.

A Brush with Mortality and the Gift of Time

Ball’s profound reflections on life and mortality are coloured by a significant health scare he experienced. In 2022, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, a diagnosis that understandably led him to contemplate his own mortality.

“For about three days after I knew I had it but didn’t know the severity, Dianne and I rationalised about whether I was coming to the end,” he recalled. “I said ‘well that’s the way it is and I’d better cash in, I’d better finish some ideas I’ve had.'”

Fortunately, medical professionals were able to reassure him that the cancer was treatable. Following a course of radiotherapy, he received the all-clear the following year. The relief and gratitude that followed were palpable. “When you come out the other end of cancer, good heavens, what a relief, and how wonderful,” he expressed. “I’ve been blessed with some more years to come.” This experience has undoubtedly amplified his appreciation for each day.

A Legacy in Children’s Television and Beyond

Johnny Ball’s career in television is nothing short of iconic. First gracing screens in the 1960s on the beloved children’s program Play School, he went on to host a string of educational and entertaining shows, including Think of a Number and Think Again, and Play Away. His presence has been a constant in British households for over seven decades, making him one of the nation’s most recognisable and cherished children’s TV presenters.

His extensive body of work continues to grow. Ball’s second memoir, Stories That Must Be Told!, is slated for release on March 28th, promising further insights into his remarkable life and career.

Family Pride: A Daughter’s Success and Enduring Relationships

Beyond his professional achievements, Johnny Ball also shared his immense pride in his children, particularly his daughter Zoe Ball. He spoke warmly about the amicable relationship Zoe maintains with her ex-husband, DJ Norman Cook, famously known as Fatboy Slim, following their separation.

“The two of them are really good buddies. They live within a mile of each other,” he said, highlighting the maturity and respect present in their post-divorce dynamic. “They’re good mates for the sake of the two children. The children have rooms in both houses, and it all works very well.” This harmonious co-parenting arrangement is a testament to their commitment to their children’s well-being.

A Deep Sense of Peace

With his health restored and his family close, Johnny Ball radiates a profound sense of peace about the future. His journey, marked by triumphs and challenges, has instilled in him a remarkable resilience.

“I’ve been kicked in the teeth in every possible way by life and by situations and by people,” he admitted. Yet, even after navigating such difficulties, his spirit remains unbroken. “But I still cannot help but smile.” This enduring optimism and zest for life are a powerful message to us all as we consider our own journeys.
