Katja Mia’s Lavish Engagement: Wedding Bells Ringing

Virgin Media Star’s Lavish Engagement Party: A Smart Strategy for Wedding Planning

For many engaged couples, the journey from proposal to “I do” is a whirlwind of decisions and details. But for Virgin Media star Katja Mia, a significant pre-wedding event has given her and her fiancé, Daragh Curran, a distinct advantage in orchestrating their upcoming nuptials. The couple, set to tie the knot in Italy this September, recently hosted a grand engagement party in Bujumbura, Burundi, the ancestral home of Katja’s parents. This elaborate celebration, attended by 300 guests, served not only as a joyous occasion but also as a strategic “head start” for their wedding planning.

The traditional engagement ceremony, known as the Dot or Dowry Day/Gukwa, carries profound cultural significance. It marks the formal moment when the groom officially requests the bride’s family’s blessing for marriage, symbolising the unification of two families. Katja revealed that navigating the complexities of this large-scale event provided invaluable insights into the logistical challenges of planning a wedding abroad.

The Groom Takes the Reins: A Testament to Teamwork

When it comes to the nitty-gritty of wedding organisation, Katja admits her fiancé, Daragh Curran – also known as The Guinness Guru – is firmly in the driver’s seat. Describing him as a “Type A” personality, Katja credits Daragh with taking the lead. “He is locked in,” she stated. While she is actively involved in the planning process with their wedding planner, Katja acknowledges Daragh’s pivotal role. “I have to give credit where it is due, he is great,” she added.

Despite the significant organisational burden Daragh carries, Katja is eagerly anticipating the more enjoyable aspects of wedding preparation, such as selecting dresses, flowers, and decor, and the overarching joy of celebrating with loved ones. “I am excited for the fun part of it like the dresses, the flowers, the decor and seeing everyone there. I know it will be all worth when the day comes,” she shared.

Katja also highlighted the importance of male partners stepping up in wedding planning, noting Daragh’s understanding and support. “It’s great that the guys are stepping up. He gets it and when there’s days when there’s no time to breathe and I forget to have dinner and breakfast, he just gets it. We tag team in that way,” she explained. This collaborative approach has been instrumental in managing the stress associated with such a momentous occasion. The scale of their traditional engagement, with 300 attendees, proved to be an intense but ultimately beneficial training ground. “We had a massive traditional engagement in September and that was 300 people. That was so stressful but I have to say both of us going through that was the best training for the wedding day. I feel like we had a mini head start on what to expect. We know what we are in for,” Katja confessed.

Ambassador for Wellness: Katja Mia’s Role in the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon

Beyond her upcoming wedding, Katja Mia is also a dedicated ambassador for the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon. Now in its 44th year, this iconic 10km event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 31 May, kicking off at 12:30pm. An estimated 30,000 women are expected to participate, walking, jogging, or running through the heart of Dublin City Centre.

This year marks a special occasion for Katja, as she will have the opportunity to fundraise as a brand ambassador and donate to a charity of her choice. This is her third consecutive year involved with the event, a role she clearly cherishes. “It’s my third year in a row doing it and it is always so electric. It is a job that I love coming back to,” she enthused.

The marathon, according to Katja, serves as a powerful platform for several important causes. “It is a great way to highlight causes that people are really sensitive and care about but also getting women together promoting wellness and fitness,” she stated.

Championing Women’s Health: Katja’s Personal Mission

Katja is particularly passionate about supporting women’s health initiatives through her fundraising efforts. Having personally experienced the challenges of endometriosis and hypothyroidism, she intends to lend her support to charities focused on these conditions. “There are a few charities that I have in mind but I will definitely be making my solid pick. It’ll be my first year being able to select a charity,” she revealed.

She elaborated on the critical need for greater awareness and advocacy surrounding women’s health issues. “As someone that goes through endometriosis and I also have hypothyroidism, I think it will be either one of those because I think people still need to be quite loud and vocal about these conditions that are women centered,” Katja explained. Her personal journey highlights the importance of being heard and believed when it comes to women’s health concerns. “Women need to be listened to more and from my own experience, I was not believed and I was just told it was a bad period and diet until I paid for my own scan and I realised that I did have endometriosis. And that was in my late 20s,” she recounted, underscoring the personal impact of medical validation.
