Radio Icon Kyle Sandilands’ Contract Terminated Amidst On-Air Controversy
The Australian entertainment landscape is abuzz following the abrupt termination of Kyle Sandilands’ lucrative contract with the Australian Radio Network (ARN). The news, confirmed by Sandilands himself early this morning, has sent ripples through the industry, with many suggesting it was an inevitable outcome after a significant on-air incident.
ARN, the owner of KIIS FM and the station that broadcasted the highly successful ‘Kyle and Jackie O Show’, reportedly found itself in a difficult position following a spectacular fallout between the two radio stars live on air almost four weeks ago.
Respected entertainment reporter Peter Ford commented on the situation, telling nine.com.au that the termination of the reported $100 million contract was “no surprise” to those in the know. The only element that caught him off guard was the timing of the official announcement.
“The only thing that surprised me was that the announcement didn’t come out yesterday,” Ford stated. “The inside word was that it was going to happen around about 5pm yesterday. When that didn’t happen, I was surprised by that.”
Ford elaborated on the speculation surrounding the delay, noting different theories. “Some people had suggested maybe there’s settlement talks going on. Other people had put it to me, ‘No they want to hold off because they don’t want him venting on Australian Idol‘.” He added that Sandilands’ public appearances, including his interview and appearance on Australian Idol on Tuesday night, suggested he was unaware of the impending decision. “And then, obviously, early this morning they gave him that news.”
Former Boss Predicts Legal Battles
Another individual unlikely to be surprised by the development is Craig Bruce, Sandilands’ former boss who has since transitioned into a successful talent coach, radio consultant, and podcaster. Bruce was instrumental in Sandilands’ career trajectory, having convinced him and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson to move from their afternoon ‘Hot30’ show to the coveted breakfast slot on 2DayFM in Sydney back in 2005. He worked closely with the duo for the following decade, helping to solidify their on-air partnership before their move to KIIS FM in 2014.
As recently as last week, Bruce had predicted to nine.com.au that the ‘Kyle and Jackie O Show’ would likely not return to the airwaves and that the matter would inevitably end up in court.
“I think they’ll go to court. They’ll try a settlement where they can retrieve some of the money from their contract, that’s going to take a couple of years,” Bruce commented.
Bruce, who hosts the ‘Game Changers’ podcast that delves into the radio and audio industry, was among the first to share Sandilands’ statement on Instagram this morning, announcing the contract termination. He reiterated his belief that Sandilands and Henderson would not be working together again in the foreseeable future.
“I think there’s a world where we won’t hear either of them, together or separately, on the radio for two or three years,” Bruce told nine.com.au.
Sandilands Vows Legal Action, Hints at New Ventures
While Peter Ford also agrees that a reunion between Sandilands and Henderson on radio is unlikely, he believes Sandilands himself will be back on air sooner rather than later. “He needs to be on air. He is like Dracula needing blood,” Ford stated. “He would never walk away from this, and I don’t know how he’s going to cope if this goes on for years and if he is prevented from working.”
Ford suggested that while another commercial radio station might hesitate to hire Sandilands, even if they could afford his reported salary, a viable alternative exists. “I do think that the subscription podcasting is the way that he’ll go. It will give him the outlet to broadcast and could be very viable financially,” Ford proposed, noting that this route would likely not violate any non-compete clauses.
Sandilands himself released a strong statement this morning, asserting that ARN had terminated his contract and that he intended to pursue the matter legally. The statement, shared by his manager Bruno Bouchet, declared: “ARN has just announced that they’ve terminated my contract. I don’t accept it. My lawyers told them last week this would be invalid. And guess what? It is. I’ve got a contract until 2034. I’ve got rights under that contract. And ARN hasn’t honoured the contract. So, it’s over to my lawyers.”
Sandilands’ Statement Unveils His Perspective
In his full statement, Kyle Sandilands provided a more detailed account of the events leading to his contract termination. He described a significant on-air disagreement with Jackie ‘O’ Henderson as the catalyst, something he claims they have experienced numerous times over their 25-year partnership.
Sandilands expressed his view that ARN, instead of managing the situation, chose to “burn the place down.” He alleged that ARN sacked Jackie, suspended him, and prevented him from communicating with his co-host or the show’s team.
“Then – and this is the bit that gets me – once they’d made it impossible for the show to go on, they turn around and say, ‘You didn’t fix it. You’re fired!'” Sandilands wrote. He confirmed apologising to Jackie ‘O’ on the night of their argument and reiterated that his apology was sincere.
Sandilands stated that he had complied with ARN’s requests for two weeks following the incident, offering to return to air with Jackie or another colleague. However, he claims ARN consistently refused these offers, indicating they were not interested in resolving the situation.
“They thought they saw a chance to get out of the contract they signed with me a year ago, and they ran with it,” he asserted. Sandilands highlighted ARN’s long-standing relationship with him and the show, emphasizing their awareness of his working style and the consistent success he delivered, including number one ratings and substantial revenue for the company.
He questioned ARN’s decision to breach a contract and face legal repercussions rather than honouring it and continuing to benefit from his broadcasting. “I’ve got a contract until 2034. I’ve got rights under that contract. And ARN hasn’t honoured the contract. So, it’s over to my lawyers,” he concluded. Addressing his listeners, Sandilands vowed, “I’m not done. Not by a long way.”
ARN’s Official Statement on Termination
ARN Media Limited issued its own statement confirming the contract termination. The company stated it had issued a notice of termination to Kyle Sandilands and Quasar Media Services Pty Ltd.
“As a result, the Kyle and Jackie O show will no longer be presented,” ARN announced. The decision was attributed to “serious misconduct and a breach of ARN’s services agreement” by Mr. Sandilands during a broadcast on 20 February 2026. ARN’s statement referenced a previous ASX announcement on 3 March 2026, which detailed that Mr. Sandilands had been given 14 days to remedy the breach.
