Kylie to Headline 2026 AFL Grand Final

Kylie Minogue Set to Dazzle at AFL Grand Final, MCG Return Confirmed

Get ready, footy fans! The AFL has finally landed a massive coup, securing global superstar Kylie Minogue to headline the entertainment at this year’s AFL Grand Final at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). After years of pursuing the Australian pop icon, the league has confirmed a deal that promises a spectacular pre-game show for the season’s ultimate showdown.

Minogue, a proud Melburnian, expressed her immense excitement about returning home for such a significant event. “The AFL grand final at Melbourne’s one and only, forever iconic MCG? Yes please!” she stated. “As a Melburnian, I’m so excited to be coming home for the biggest day in the Aussie sporting calendar.”

AFL Chief Executive Andrew Dillon echoed her enthusiasm, revealing that Minogue has long been at the top of the league’s wishlist for grand final performers. “There is no better artist to headline the performance prior to our biggest game of the season,” Dillon commented. “Our AFL team recently joined Kylie at the MCG for the grand final content shoot, and you could already feel the excitement for September building.”

This electrifying news coincides with the AFL’s confirmation that the much-loved traditional day grand final will continue in 2026 and 2027, kicking off at 2:30 PM, despite ongoing discussions about a potential shift to a twilight or night game.

New AFL Chairman Craig Drummond addressed the scheduling, emphasising the importance of providing certainty for fans and stakeholders in the immediate future. While not ruling out future reassessments of the timeslot, Drummond stated, “We are very focused, as we said, on the fans, on the footy, the quality of the footy product, but not saying that in the future, we wouldn’t look to reassess. But at this point in time, we think it’s really important to give our stakeholders certainty, and that’s why two years, we think, makes eminently good sense.”

A Pop Princess Returns to the Grand Stage

Kylie Minogue, affectionately known as the “Princess of Pop,” is an Australian treasure with a career spanning decades, marked by unparalleled success as a singer, songwriter, and actor. Her impressive accolades include two Grammy Awards and four Brit Awards, cementing her status as a global music phenomenon.

This performance at the AFL Grand Final follows a recent appearance at billionaire Anthony Pratt’s birthday party earlier this month. Interestingly, Minogue’s headline slot places her in the company of other international stars who have previously graced the grand final stage. American pop sensation Katy Perry, who also performed at Pratt’s birthday in 2024, headlined the AFL decider later that same year.

In recent years, the AFL has often opted for major international acts to entertain the crowds. While some have been met with widespread acclaim, others have courted controversy. Last year, US hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg’s performance divided opinion, with some fans impressed and others left unimpressed when certain lyrical choices resurfaced. The decade prior has seen performances from global heavyweights such as KISS, Robbie Williams, Katy Perry, and The Killers.

Minogue’s appearance marks a significant moment, as she will be the first Australian to headline the grand final entertainment since Eskimo Joe and a collection of other local artists performed in 2021. That year’s grand final was famously moved to Optus Stadium in Perth due to COVID-19 lockdowns in Melbourne.

Looking Ahead: Grand Final Timeslot and Future Considerations

Dillon also indicated that the league would be reviewing the grand final timeslot in preparation for the 2028 season, a year that will see the introduction of the 19th team, the Tasmania Devils. The twilight slot, which was utilised for the 2021 grand final in Perth (resulting in a nighttime start for eastern states viewers), has been viewed by the league as a potential future preference, partly due to the extended time required for presentations and post-game celebrations. The 2020 and 2021 grand finals were held outside of Melbourne due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“It was more about that in 2028, we will have the 19th team, so we’ll have a fixture structure that is different, so there will be a lot of planning going into the entry of Tasmania and how the season structure is going to work, and grand final time might be part of that,” Dillon explained.

For now, however, all eyes are on September 26th, when Kylie Minogue is set to light up the MCG and deliver an unforgettable performance at the pinnacle event of the Australian sporting calendar.
