Melbourne’s Love Letter: A New City Hotel

Melbourne’s Newest Gem: Hannah St Hotel Captures the City’s Soul

Melbourne has a new darling on the hotel scene, and it’s more than just a place to rest your head. Hannah St Hotel, a design-led property that opened its doors in December 2025, is rapidly becoming the city’s hottest destination. It masterfully encapsulates the vibrant, multifaceted character of Melbourne itself, offering guests an immersive experience that extends far beyond their room.

At the heart of Hannah St Hotel’s unique appeal is its stunning interior design, curated by the acclaimed Flack Studio. This multidisciplinary powerhouse, known for its stylish and distinctive projects across Australia and internationally, has crafted a space that speaks volumes about Melbourne’s creative and elegant spirit. Flack Studio’s signature aesthetic, characterised by a deliberate and artful use of colour, materiality, and an unexpected yet harmonious blend of elements, strikes a perfect chord between contemporary cool and timeless sophistication. For David Flack, the Melbourne-based principal of the studio, this project represents a homecoming, a passionate love letter to his beloved city.

The hotel is part of the esteemed Collection by TFE Hotels, a portfolio that champions independently owned properties deeply connected to their local communities and design integrity. This ethos is evident in other notable establishments like The Eve Hotel in Sydney and The Calile Hotel in Brisbane.

Location, Location, Location: Southbank’s New Heartbeat

Hannah St Hotel is strategically situated in the bustling heart of Melbourne’s Southbank, playing a pivotal role in the area’s ongoing cultural renaissance. Its prime position places it within a convenient 15-minute radius of key city precincts, sitting at the nexus of the CBD, the iconic Yarra River, the chic streets of South Melbourne, and the vibrant Arts Precinct.

The 10-level hotel is housed within the striking Queensbridge Building. This new mixed-use development boasts a distinctive wedge-shaped, or “bullnose,” footprint, a design reminiscent of New York City’s famed 1920s Flatiron Building. Nestled discreetly beneath the Kingsway overpass, the initial impression might lean towards an urban jungle. However, this feeling quickly dissipates as you transition to the Southbank Promenade. A leisurely stroll along the Yarra reveals a lively hub of eateries, riverside bars, talented sketch artists, and engaging street performers, offering a quintessential Melbourne Saturday experience.

Princes Bridge is a mere 15-minute walk away, providing easy access across the Yarra to the CBD and Federation Square. For art enthusiasts, a short journey south along St Kilda Road leads directly to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) International.

A Symphony of Style and Personality

From the moment of arrival, Hannah St Hotel announces its bold personality. The main entrance, subtly tucked beneath the overpass, is a delightful surprise, adorned in vibrant Barbie pink and playful polka dots. Guests are immediately greeted by “Mirror Sheila,” a striking three-metre sculpture by artist Justene Williams, a testament to the hotel’s commitment to an engaging art program.

Flack Studio has masterfully woven a rich tapestry of influences into the hotel’s design. Drawing inspiration from French Modernism, mid-century Italian design, American Art Deco, and even the Industrial Revolution, they have created a truly unique environment that mirrors Melbourne’s layered soul. It’s a captivating blend of grit and glamour, where vintage-style signage flickers with neon, tactile textiles and gestural shapes meet industrial finishes, and bold colours punctuate the narrative. Just as a sense of nostalgia begins to settle in, a contemporary element snaps you back to the present, ensuring a dynamic and engaging experience. The overall vibe is one of welcoming accessibility, exuding a playful coolness that feels effortlessly achieved.

The “Lookout Corner Suite,” where this writer stayed, truly capitalised on the hotel’s unique architectural form. Its angular shape, a result of the building’s distinctive footprint, offered a sweeping, panoramic vista of the city. The suite was generously proportioned, featuring a plush king bed and a separate living area. The custom-made banquette seating, expertly fitted to the room’s unusual layout, added a touch of bespoke luxury. Quality finishes were evident everywhere, from the soft, blush-coloured carpets underfoot to the exposed piping of the concrete ceiling, juxtaposed against a striking Yves Klein blue reading chair.

The minibar was a thoughtful curation of artisanal snacks and a selection of local wines, beers, and soft drinks. Space was utilised with remarkable efficiency, including a cleverly integrated wardrobe and storage area within the gallery-style hallway that led to a generous bathroom. This space, rendered in sophisticated grey and blue tones with elegant terrazzo flooring, included a separate shower and toilet.

Culinary Delights: A Taste of Melbourne

Overseeing the hotel’s food and beverage program is the renowned Melbourne hospitality group, The Mulberry Group, led by Nathan Toleman. They have crafted a diverse culinary experience across five distinct venues, designed to cater to guests and locals from morning coffee to late-night cocktails.

The rail-inspired Carriage Lounge is the perfect spot for drinks.

Under the culinary direction of Executive Chef Andrew Beddoes, Coupette offers a playful interpretation of the European bistro, infused with a distinct Melbourne sensibility.

The breakfast menu is a vibrant affair, featuring everything from delicate pastries and wholesome almond oat cups to creative avocado toast, a flavourful blue swimmer crab omelette, and decadent French toast with blueberry, maple syrup, and burnt orange curd.

Lunch presents a curated selection of bistro classics, while dinner elevates the experience to one of refined elegance. The evening menu features exquisite dishes such as steak frites, succulent lamb rump, and perfectly prepared market fish with beurre blanc. The wine list thoughtfully showcases a selection of both local and European vintages.
