Anita Farrell: The Unsung Partner Behind Ryanair Boss Michael O’Leary
While Michael O’Leary, the famously outspoken CEO of Ryanair, frequently grabs headlines for his business acumen and sometimes controversial pronouncements, his wife, Anita Farrell, has consistently chosen a more private existence. For over two decades, she has been a steadfast presence by his side, navigating the whirlwind of his high-profile career and family life.
A Whirlwind Romance
The couple’s story began in the early 2000s, a time often referred to as the “early noughties.” Their paths first crossed at the wedding of Shane Ryan, son of Ryanair’s founder, to Lorraine Kinsella, held in the picturesque setting of Tipperary. Anita, then 12 years younger than her future husband, was a bridesmaid at the ceremony. It was there, amidst the celebrations, that sparks flew between her and Michael.
From Executive to Wife and Mother
Anita Farrell, now 52, is described as a striking beauty who hails from Blackrock. Her educational journey saw her attend Mount Anville Secondary School in Mount Merrion, where she was recognised for her sharp intellect and academic prowess. She further honed her skills by pursuing a business degree at University College Dublin (UCD).
Her friendship with Lorraine Kinsella, the bride at the wedding where she met Michael, dates back to their school days at Mount Anville. Before dedicating herself to her family, Anita held a position as an executive at Citibank.
The courtship between Anita and Michael was reportedly swift and romantic. After dating for approximately a year, Michael proposed to Anita on her birthday, presenting her with a substantial €30,000 marquis diamond ring.
The Grand Wedding
The couple exchanged vows on September 6, 2003, in a ceremony held in Michael’s native County Westmeath. Their union was marked by a lavish affair, though the exact planning details remain a subject of lighthearted discussion. While it was widely believed that Michael orchestrated the entire event, vans from Ovation, a company specialising in conference and event management, were spotted near the venue.
According to reports from the time, Michael arrived at the wedding venue ten minutes ahead of schedule. Stepping out for a breath of fresh air, he was overheard by journalists admitting, “I’m terrified. I’ve never been more nervous in my life.” He also playfully quipped that Anita’s tardiness was due to her flying with Aer Lingus.

Indeed, the bride made a grand entrance approximately 37 minutes later, arriving in a Bentley. Anita’s appearance was described as elegant and understated. Her blonde hair was adorned with white rose buds, complementing the groom’s buttonhole and her bouquet of roses and white Anthurium flowers with a hint of pink. She wore a tasteful Vera Wang gown.
The guest list included a number of prominent figures, such as J.P. McManus and his wife Noreen, as well as former politicians Mary Harney and Charlie McCreevy. The celebrations continued at the O’Leary family’s Gigginstown House, where three marquees were set up to accommodate dining and dancing.

One guest recounted Michael’s wedding speech, noting it was uncharacteristically personal. Instead of business matters, he spoke openly about his feelings for Anita and his profound love for her. The overall sentiment was that the wedding, while grand in scale, felt like a warm and joyous country celebration, with everyone thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Life at Gigginstown House
Today, Anita and Michael, along with their four children, reside at Gigginstown House, located near Delvin in County Westmeath. This sprawling estate is not just their family home but also the heart of Michael O’Leary’s significant agricultural and equestrian pursuits.

At Gigginstown House Stud, Michael breeds Aberdeen Angus cattle and is a prominent figure in horse racing. His horses have achieved considerable success, including victories at prestigious events like the Cheltenham Gold Cup and multiple wins in the Grand National in 2016, 2018, and 2019. It is understood that their children are actively involved in the daily operations of the farm and the racing stable, contributing to the life of this expansive 1,000-acre property.
Family Dynamics and Shifting Priorities
While Michael O’Leary is known for his demanding professional life, his family remains a significant focus. In a 2014 interview with the Daily Telegraph, he candidly described their annual two-week summer holidays in the Algarve as an exercise in “trying not to murder” his children. He expressed a longing for “peace and quiet,” which he admitted was often a “forlorn hope.” His strategy for managing family holidays involved attempting to exhaust his children by late afternoon, hoping for some respite in the evenings with his wife before the cycle began anew the next day. He wryly remarked that he “comes back to work for a rest.”

A significant shift in Michael’s priorities was announced in May 2019. He revealed his intention to gradually phase out his Gigginstown House racing team over a five-year period, a decision driven by a desire to spend more time with his family. He explained that as his children entered their teenage years, his involvement in their activities increased, leaving him with less time for National Hunt racing, a situation he anticipated would continue.

In the present day, Anita plays a crucial role in managing the family home and providing unwavering support for Michael’s diverse business and racing ventures. She maintains her characteristic low-key and understated demeanour, often described as the most intelligent person in any room. Her quiet strength and dedication are undoubtedly a cornerstone of the O’Leary family’s life.
