Musician Stabbed After Newcastle Gig, Man Charged with Attempted Murder
A shocking incident unfolded in Newcastle overnight, leaving the local music community reeling. A well-known musician, Greg Bryce, was allegedly stabbed multiple times outside Club Merewether on Caldwell Street following a solo performance. Police were called to the scene shortly after the incident, where they were informed that Mr. Bryce had been attacked near the club’s foyer.
Paramedics attended the scene and provided initial treatment, but a doctor present at the club had already begun administering aid to the injured musician. Mr. Bryce was subsequently transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition. He sustained several stab wounds to his chest and back, including a punctured lung, necessitating immediate medical intervention. His manager, Yianni Moratidis, confirmed to the ABC that Mr. Bryce has undergone surgery and is currently recovering in a hospital ward.
The alleged assailant, identified as 53-year-old Stockton resident Yury Skrynnik, has been charged with attempted murder and contravening an apprehended domestic violence order. Police have stated that the two men were known to each other.
Greg Bryce is a long-standing and respected figure in the Newcastle music scene. For over four decades, he has been the frontman of the popular rock band DV8, a fixture that has contributed significantly to the region’s musical landscape. The news of his alleged stabbing has sent ripples of disbelief and concern through his peers and fans.
Outpouring of Shock and Support from the Music Community
Musicians who have collaborated with or known Greg Bryce for years have expressed their deep shock and offered their unwavering support. Grant Walmsley, former guitarist for the renowned band The Screaming Jets, described Mr. Bryce as an exceptionally kind individual.
“People who know Greg would know he is just one of the most beautiful people in the world,” Walmsley stated. He added that he had spoken with Mr. Bryce that morning and that he was “doing OK considering and he is going to be OK.” Walmsley emphasised Mr. Bryce’s need for a quiet period to focus on his recovery, assuring that the musician is aware of the widespread well-wishes and is receiving excellent care.
Brien McVernon, another prominent local musician, shared his astonishment at the alleged attack on his friend. “There’s not a bone of violence in Greg’s body,” McVernon commented, underscoring the perceived incongruity of such an act befalling someone of Bryce’s gentle nature.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Following the incident, police apprehended Mr. Skrynnik at a residence in Stockton in the early hours of the morning. He was taken to Newcastle Police Station and formally charged.
During his appearance at Newcastle bail court, a Russian interpreter was present to assist Mr. Skrynnik. However, the interpreter’s services were ultimately not required as Mr. Skrynnik did not apply for bail. Bail was formally refused, and he has been remanded in custody.
Investigation Underway at Club Merewether
Club Merewether was cordoned off and declared a crime scene this morning. Detectives and forensic officers have been meticulously examining the premises, including the area near the foyer, in their efforts to gather crucial evidence related to the alleged stabbing.
Newcastle City Police are appealing to the public for any information that might assist their investigation. They urge any witnesses who may have seen or heard anything relevant to come forward or to contact Crime Stoppers.
Mr. Skrynnik is scheduled to reappear in court in May. The legal proceedings are expected to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding this deeply concerning event.
