New Port Coach Embraces Challenge

Carr Ready to Embrace AFL Coaching Challenge with Port Adelaide

Port Adelaide’s new senior coach, Josh Carr, is brimming with a potent mix of excitement and anticipation as he prepares to step into the senior coaching hot seat for the first time this Sunday. His debut will see the Power face North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium, marking a significant milestone in a coaching journey that has been steadily building for years.

“Let’s get stuck into it,” Carr told AAP, encapsulating his eagerness to commence his tenure. “I’m excited about the year and what it looks like – and even the unknown of it; what you don’t really know… is probably more exciting.” This sentiment highlights a coach ready to embrace the inherent challenges and unpredictability of an AFL season.

The path to becoming a senior AFL coach hasn’t been a direct one for Carr. His association with Port Adelaide began as an assistant coach back in 2011. He then ventured into the SANFL, taking the reins as head coach for North Adelaide in 2016. A return to the AFL landscape saw him join Fremantle as an assistant in 2019, before finally returning to Alberton for the 2023 season, culminating in his appointment as Ken Hinkley’s successor in February last year.

Reflecting on his career progression, Carr acknowledged the unique pressures that come with the senior coaching role. “I haven’t been week-to-week in the chair of being a senior coach and the pressures of wins and losses,” he admitted. However, he expressed strong confidence in his readiness. “But right now, I feel like I am prepared for it and am really confident in us as a footy club to get through it together.”

Port Adelaide enters the upcoming season with Carr at the helm, having missed the finals in the previous year. Despite the need for further improvement, Carr is content with the gains made during the pre-season. He stressed the delicate balance required when implementing a new coaching program. “We’ve still got a fair bit to go – that’s the challenge,” he stated. “As coaches, when you first introduce a new program, you do want to give the players the information but you have got to be careful about how much information you do give them. We’ve been really conscious of that as a coaching group. We have got so much to learn and to get better at but, at the same time, I feel like we have come a long way.”

Carr’s inaugural season as senior coach is already being shaped by significant off-field discussions, particularly surrounding the future of star midfielder Zak Butters. Butters, a three-time recipient of the club’s best-and-fairest award, is reportedly fielding substantial multi-million dollar offers from rival clubs as he approaches the end of his contract.

The new coach expressed his strong desire to retain the talented Victorian-born player. “We’d love to lock him away now,” Carr said of the 25-year-old dynamo. He also demonstrated an understanding of Butters’ current situation. “But I get it and I understand it. And I know what his commitment to us is right now.” Carr’s priority is clear: fostering an environment that makes Port Adelaide an attractive proposition for Butters. “And for me, it’s about creating a really good environment, a really positive environment, and trying to make it somewhere where he wants to be. His decision is a hard one.”

The club’s focus, under Carr’s guidance, will be on building a strong foundation and a positive culture. This approach aims to not only secure key players like Butters but also to instill a sense of unity and purpose throughout the playing group, setting the stage for a competitive and exciting season ahead. Carr’s blend of experience, ambition, and understanding of player dynamics positions him as a key figure in Port Adelaide’s quest for future success.
