Postcode Lottery: £5m Dream Fund Fuels Australian Charities

Postcode Lottery Launches £5 Million ‘Dream Fund’ for Ambitious Charity Projects

The Postcode Lottery has thrown open the doors to its highly anticipated ‘Dream Fund’ for 2026, offering a substantial £5 million grant to a single charity with a truly ambitious, long-held vision. This significant sum is earmarked for a project that a charity has “long dreamed of delivering but never had the opportunity to bring to life,” aiming to catalyse groundbreaking work across the United Kingdom.

This year’s initiative builds on a legacy of supporting transformative projects. In 2023, the Alzheimer’s Society was a major beneficiary of the £5 million Dream Fund, receiving backing for its vital work to develop a simple blood test for diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease. The hope is that this innovative test will be integrated into the National Health Service (NHS), enabling earlier detection of this devastating condition. Early diagnosis is crucial, offering individuals a greater opportunity to access support and treatments that can significantly improve their quality of life. The urgency of this cause is underscored by the stark reality that one in three people born today are projected to receive a dementia diagnosis in their lifetime.

The Dream Fund’s impact extends beyond health initiatives. In 2020, a generous grant of over £1.1 million was awarded to a project focused on reintroducing wild European bison to the UK. This initiative marked the return of the species to Britain for the first time in 6,000 years. Today, these magnificent animals can be seen roaming freely in the West Blean and Thornden Woods in Kent, where they play an integral role in restoring and enhancing natural woodland ecosystems.

The importance of such conservation efforts cannot be overstated. Across the UK, a concerning 56 per cent of native species are in decline, with 165 species currently listed as critically endangered. Some species have teetered on the brink of extinction, highlighting the critical need for initiatives like the Dream Fund to support vital conservation and environmental restoration work.

The launch event for this year’s £5 million fund took place on Wednesday at the picturesque Eden Project in Cornwall. The Postcode Lottery has expressed its keen interest in receiving proposals that showcase:

  • Innovation: Ideas that present novel approaches or solutions.
  • Ambition: Projects with significant, far-reaching goals.
  • Long-term Impact: Initiatives designed to create lasting positive change.
  • Community Benefit: Proposals that will make a tangible difference to communities across Britain.

Dame Ellen MacArthur, Founder of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a three-time recipient of the Dream Fund, shared her enthusiasm. She stated, “Winning the Postcode Lottery Dream Fund has catalysed some of our most important work over the last 15 years. Whether it was partnering with the world’s largest businesses to design out plastic pollution, redesigning denim jeans, or innovating towards a food system that works with nature rather than against it – the Dream Fund has made it possible to pursue ideas that feel too big, until they aren’t. We can’t wait to see what the next Dream Fund winners make possible.”

Clara Govier, Managing Director at the Postcode Lottery, emphasised the direct impact of player contributions: “Thanks to Postcode Lottery players, the £5 million Dream Fund backs ambitious ideas that charities have long dreamed of delivering. At a time when the sector is under real pressure, we want organisations to come together, think bigger and develop solutions that could transform communities across Britain. We’re excited to see the next generation of partnerships and the impact they could create.”

Charities with a grand vision and a project ready to take flight are encouraged to explore the application process for the 2026 Postcode Lottery Dream Fund. This is a unique opportunity to secure the funding needed to turn a long-held aspiration into a tangible reality, benefiting communities and ecosystems across the nation.
