A Historic Breakthrough in Drag Racing
Shawn Langdon made history on Saturday (AEST) by shattering the NHRA speed record, achieving an incredible 555km/h during a Top Fuel qualifying run at South Georgia Motorsports Park. This remarkable feat surpassed the previous record of 552.8km/h set by Brittany Force in 2025. Langdon covered the 305-metre track in just 3.7 seconds, a time that is only slightly behind Force’s record run of 3.6 seconds.
Langdon’s achievement occurred during the NHRA’s debut at South Georgia Motorsports Park, one of the newest venues on the drag-racing series’ 20-event schedule. The event marked a significant milestone for the sport, as it expanded its reach to new locations and audiences.
The Road to the Record
The 2013 Top Fuel champion had already been making waves with several impressive runs during preseason testing, including multiple 547.1km/h passes. Entering the weekend, Langdon was ranked second in points, trailing only Doug Kalitta after four events. His performance at South Georgia Motorsports Park was not just a personal triumph but also a validation of the team’s hard work and dedication.
“It was special for the guys,” Langdon said. “I was happy for them, especially (crew chief) Brian (Husen). We were able to do that testing, and some people had different ideas on what they thought—if it was legit or not. We kind of talked about it and Brian was like, ‘Well, we’ll just do it in the season to prove it was legit.’”
This statement highlights the determination and confidence of Langdon and his team, who were committed to proving their capabilities on the track.
Other Notable Performances
In addition to Langdon’s record-breaking run, other racers also made their mark at the event. Three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, competing in his third full season in NHRA’s top division, secured second place in qualifying with a 3.7-second run at 538.6km/h. Stewart’s performance underscored the competitive nature of the event and the high level of skill among the participants.
Expansion of the NHRA Schedule
The NHRA continued its growth by adding two new tracks to its 2026 schedule. This marks the first expansion of the drag-racing series in over a decade, reflecting the increasing popularity of the sport and the demand for more events across the country. The addition of these new venues not only provides more opportunities for racers but also allows fans to experience the excitement of drag racing in different locations.
The Future of Drag Racing
With Langdon’s record-breaking performance and the NHRA’s expansion, the future of drag racing looks promising. The sport continues to attract top talent and passionate fans, ensuring that it remains a thrilling and dynamic part of motorsport. As the NHRA moves forward, it will be interesting to see how these new tracks and competitors contribute to the evolution of the sport.
