Queensland Reds Secure Crucial Victory Over ACT Brumbies
The Queensland Reds have celebrated a significant milestone in their recent match against the ACT Brumbies, securing a vital win that propels them into the top four of the Super Rugby Pacific competition. This victory marks the first time since the pandemic era that the Reds have managed to defeat the Brumbies twice in a single season, showcasing their growing strength and determination.
Lukhan Salakaia-Loto was at the forefront of this success, delivering an impressive performance that has bolstered his case for selection in the Wallabies squad. His contributions on the field were instrumental in the Reds’ 30-21 victory at Suncorp Stadium, which not only highlighted his physical presence but also his ability to inspire his teammates.
Fraser McReight, the Reds’ captain, praised Salakaia-Loto’s efforts, stating:
- “He’s outstanding. He’s doing such a good job. All the boys love him and love his energy and having him, carrying the way he’s carrying and being that physical presence for us is outstanding. It just makes it easy.”
This spirited and back-and-forth match saw the Reds overcome the Brumbies, who have now suffered three consecutive defeats for the first time since 2018. This loss has further pushed the Brumbies down the standings, placing them in fifth position after previously leading the competition following two rounds.
The Reds’ respect for the Brumbies ultimately played a key role in securing the win. Three successful penalty goals from flyhalf Harry McLaughlin-Phillips proved decisive in the nine-point victory. The Reds have traditionally favored trying for tries over penalty kicks, but this season they have opted for penalties specifically against the Brumbies.

By denying the Brumbies even a bonus point, the Reds not only overtook the Brumbies but also solidified their position in the standings. With the Brumbies suffering their sixth loss in the past eight matches, they find themselves in a precarious position, sitting in sixth place with four weeks remaining until the finals.
Ryan Lonergan, the Brumbies’ returning scrumhalf, expressed the team’s resolve:
- “We’ve just got to review hard and just keep believing. We’ve just got to keep working hard, keep reviewing hard, and keep each other accountable.”
Despite the setback, the Queensland Reds are on a high after edging out the defending champion Crusaders to claim fourth spot. Les Kiss, the Reds’ mentor and soon-to-be Wallabies coach, was particularly impressed by the second-row performances of Lachlan Shaw and Salakaia-Loto, who exchanged early tries during the match.

Salakaia-Loto made an immediate impact, scoring a try in the sixth minute to counteract Shaw’s pick-and-go effort. McLaughlin-Phillips then broke the deadlock with his first penalty goal. In a pivotal moment for the Brumbies’ coach Stephen Larkham, the Reds extended their lead to 10 points just before halftime when Josh Flook capitalized on Kalani Thomas’s well-weighted grubber kick.
Another penalty from McLaughlin-Phillips seemed to put the Reds in control with a 13-point lead. However, a mistake by flanker Harry Wilson allowed the Brumbies to make a comeback. Rob Valetini took full advantage, crossing the line to reduce the deficit to six points. David Feliuai then forced his way over to put the Brumbies back in front.
Despite losing four straight lineouts, the Reds managed to withstand the pressure. Lock Seru Uru scored the Reds’ third try, and McLaughlin-Phillips’ third penalty sealed the victory, marking Tom Wright’s milestone 100th Super Rugby match.
