RTE Star Michael Lyster’s Funeral Arrangements Revealed

The Australian sporting community is reflecting on the passing of a beloved and respected figure in broadcasting, Michael Lyster, who has died at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness. Known for his calm demeanour and professional approach, Lyster was a fixture on television screens for decades, most notably as the long-serving presenter of a prominent Gaelic Games show. His death on Sunday has prompted widespread tributes from those who knew him, with many describing him as a true gentleman and a master of his craft, adept at navigating even the most passionate discussions during crucial half-time analyses.

Lyster’s career with RTE spanned many years, beginning in 1979. He became the face of a major sporting highlights program, taking the helm as anchor in 1984. While he covered a range of significant sporting events, including the Olympic Games, it was his deep connection to and insightful coverage of Gaelic Games that truly cemented his legacy. He bid farewell to his role on the iconic program in 2018, following the All-Ireland football final, a fitting end to a distinguished tenure.

One of Lyster’s particular strengths was his ability to manage the diverse personalities and often spirited debates among the show’s regular panel of pundits. He was admired for his skill in balancing the opinions of respected commentators such as Joe Brolly, Pat Spillane, and Colm O’Rourke, fostering an engaging yet respectful environment for viewers.

Beyond the studio, Michael Lyster had a passion for motorsports, having once competed as a rally driver. He achieved a notable third-place finish in the Cork International Rally, showcasing a competitive spirit that extended beyond the broadcast booth.

In later years, Lyster became a vocal advocate for heart health. Following his diagnosis with heart failure in 2015, he openly shared his experiences, raising awareness and encouraging others to prioritise their cardiovascular well-being.

The news of his passing prompted a heartfelt statement from the Director-General of RTE, Kevin Bakhurst. He expressed deep sorrow, remembering Michael as an “absolute gentleman” and a “wonderful broadcaster” with a profound love for sports, particularly Gaelic Games.

A Legacy of Calm and Professionalism

Bakhurst lauded Lyster’s significant contribution to RTE’s Gaelic Games coverage, highlighting his central role in presenting countless memorable matches and facilitating insightful panel discussions that will remain etched in the memories of fans. He further elaborated on Lyster’s personal qualities:

“Michael’s calm, fair, and professional style, along with his great sense of humour and fun, endeared him to so many fans and colleagues alike. My thoughts are with his family and many friends at this sad time. May he rest in peace.”
