England Defender Ben White Faces Mixed Reception at Wembley
Thomas Tuchel, the England manager, has expressed his disappointment following a mixed reception for defender Ben White during his return to international football at Wembley. The Arsenal player, making his first appearance for England in four years, was met with jeers from some sections of the crowd upon being substituted on against Uruguay.
The 28-year-old defender had previously made himself unavailable for selection under former manager Gareth Southgate, citing “personal reasons” for his absence from the 2022 World Cup. This history, coupled with the circumstances of his latest outing, seemed to fuel the discontent.
The drama surrounding White’s return was palpable. Not only was he booed onto the pitch, but his eventful night continued as he scored what appeared to be the winning goal for England. However, his contributions were overshadowed by a costly mistake in stoppage time. He conceded a penalty, which was coolly converted by Federico Valverde, resulting in a frustrating 1-1 draw in an otherwise subdued friendly match.
Tuchel acknowledged hearing the jeers, though he admitted he was focused on team matters on the field and didn’t fully register the extent of the crowd’s reaction. “I heard that he was booed,” Tuchel stated. “I didn’t hear it actually on the field because I was involved in the changes and instructions, so I didn’t hear it so I think then it cannot be the majority.”
Despite this, the manager was clear in his stance. “There were some boos and some mixed reception for him, which I am disappointed about because of course we protect our players and he was excellent in camp and he deserved to come on. He deserved also to start and got us almost the winner.”
Tuchel stressed that White must be resilient. “He needs to take it on the chin. We will always protect him and hopefully we can put it behind (us) because he is ready to write some new chapters and we are ready to give him the chance, so hopefully everyone can move on and accept it.”
Injury Concerns and Refereeing Decisions Mar the Match
The friendly against Uruguay was not without further incident and concern for the England camp. The team is now facing potential injury setbacks ahead of their next fixture against Japan.
Phil Foden was forced to limp off the field in the second half after a robust challenge from Uruguay’s Ronald Araujo. Adding to the injury woes, Noni Madueke was observed leaving the stadium with his knee in a brace, having sustained an injury in the first half of the match.
Tuchel expressed his frustration with both challenges, suggesting that the referee, Sven Jablonski, had a difficult evening. He was particularly incensed by the late penalty awarded to Uruguay. The decision came after the referee was prompted by VAR to review a challenge by White on Federico Vinas.
“I think it’s a very soft penalty,” the England boss commented. “Of course there is contact, but it’s so obvious what the striker is trying to do. Maybe Ben is also a bit greedy in this moment, but to overturn a decision when the referee clearly, clearly made the signal with both hands that he saw it and it was not enough for him.”
Tuchel questioned the application of VAR, especially in light of other incidents. “Then to overturn it I was surprised VAR is in place because I thought it’s not working, because the tackle on Phil Foden was not even checked, tackle against Noni not even checked. And then suddenly, this one was checked. OK, like I said, I don’t think it’s enough, but OK, it is what it is.”
He also alluded to another potential foul that went unpunished. “I heard that our goal was a tough block before our goal. I haven’t seen it, so, yeah, overall, that’s what it is.”
The availability of players for the upcoming match against Japan will be a key consideration for Tuchel, who needs to assess the fitness of his squad before the arrival of 11 established players who are set to join the group. The mixed performance and the injury concerns will undoubtedly be at the forefront of his mind as he prepares for the next international fixture.
