A Scenic Journey for a Song: Settle-Carlisle Line Celebrates 150 Years
One of Britain’s most breathtaking railway routes, the Settle-Carlisle line, is marking a significant milestone – its 150th anniversary. To celebrate this momentous occasion, passengers can soon experience the magic of this iconic journey for a mere $1.50, with thousands of heavily discounted tickets set to be released in the coming months.
This celebrated route, connecting Leeds, Settle, and Carlisle, is renowned for its spectacular scenery, winding through the majestic Pennine Hills, the rolling Yorkshire Dales, and the picturesque Eden Valley in Cumbria. It’s a journey that captivates travellers, offering unparalleled views and a chance to immerse themselves in the British countryside.

The Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company has orchestrated a year-long program of festivities to commemorate the anniversary. Among the highlights is a special chartered steam train that will traverse the line between Carlisle and York on Monday, 25 May, offering a nostalgic and unforgettable travel experience.
Engineering Marvels and Natural Wonders
The line itself is a testament to Victorian engineering prowess. Its 72-mile stretch is dotted with 14 tunnels and over 20 viaducts, none more famous than the Ribblehead Viaduct. This colossal structure, spanning a quarter of a mile and soaring 104 feet high, is an iconic landmark and a photographer’s dream. The sheer scale and beauty of the viaduct, set against the dramatic backdrop of the moors, make it a truly unforgettable sight.

The allure of the Settle-Carlisle line is not just a local secret. Earlier this year, the esteemed travel guide Lonely Planet recognised its exceptional beauty, naming it as one of the top 10 most scenic train trips in Europe. This international acclaim underscores the unique appeal of this historic railway.
Record Passenger Numbers and Future Prospects
The popularity of the Settle-Carlisle line is evident in its passenger numbers. In 2025, Northern Rail recorded an impressive 995,000 passenger journeys on the route, the highest annual total since the COVID-19 pandemic. The summer months, particularly August, proved to be the busiest, with 96,000 journeys undertaken.
Alex Hornby, Northern’s Commercial and Customer Director, expressed his confidence in the line’s continued success, anticipating over a million journeys this year. He highlighted the ever-changing, breathtaking scenery and the numerous opportunities for passengers to disembark and explore the charming towns and villages along the way. “It’s easy to see why this line is so popular,” Hornby stated, “and we’re delighted to see that it’s been rightly recognised as one of the most scenic trips in Europe. We’re looking forward to the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary.”
Connecting Communities and Celebrating Heritage
Pete Myers, Chair of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, emphasised the line’s vital role in connecting communities and providing a sustainable, scenic mode of transport for visitors. “The Settle-Carlisle line is unique, connecting communities from Yorkshire through to Cumbria, and also providing a sustainable and beautiful way for visitors to explore the Yorkshire Dales, Westmorland Dales and Lake District,” Myers commented.
He added, “In our special anniversary year, we are working closely with communities along the line to provide a host of events for visitors and locals to enjoy, and all accessible via our award-winning line.”
The construction of the Settle-Carlisle section, completed in 1875, was a monumental undertaking involving 6,000 workers and overcoming significant geographical challenges. Today, this historic line not only serves as a vital transport link but also stands as a proud symbol of heritage and a gateway to some of the most stunning landscapes the UK has to offer. The 150th-anniversary celebrations promise to be a fitting tribute to this remarkable railway.
