This initiative comes at a time when households across Victoria are bracing for potential increases in their energy expenses. In fact, households in the state could see their annual electricity bills drop by an average of $46 in the upcoming financial year, according to recent proposals.
Proposed Price Reductions on the Horizon
The Victorian energy regulator has put forward a proposal to lower benchmark prices by as much as 3 per cent across each of the state’s five electricity networks. This proposed reduction is largely attributed to a significant decrease in environmental costs that energy companies incur to support government renewable energy programs.
Benchmark prices serve as a crucial safeguard for consumers who may not actively compare energy providers or are unable to do so. A substantial 17 per cent of households currently remain on these benchmark plans. Furthermore, these prices also function as a vital reference point for the broader Victorian energy market.
The Australian Energy Regulator has also proposed price reductions for New South Wales, south-east Queensland, and South Australia, with potential decreases of up to 10.1 per cent.
New Protections for Long-Term Customers
These proposed price drops coincide with the introduction of new electricity rules slated to take effect in Victoria from July 1st. Under these forthcoming regulations, energy retailers will be mandated to ensure that customers who have been on the same plan for over four years are being charged a “reasonable price.” If these customers are not on the most favourable rates, retailers will be required to transition them to a cheaper, more suitable plan.
Eligibility for the $100 Power Saving Bonus
To successfully claim the $100 Power Saving Bonus, applicants must possess a valid concession card and have a recent residential electricity bill readily available.
The specific eligible concession cards include:
- Health Care Card
- Pensioner Concession Card
- Veterans’ Affairs Pensioner Concession Card
- Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card
Individuals who are renting their homes, residing in retirement villages, or living in caravan parks are also eligible to apply, provided they hold one of the aforementioned concession cards and have an energy account registered at their current address.
